The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking applications for multiple tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, although particularly compelling candidates will be considered at higher ranks. We are looking for candidates with a strong experimental interest in Electronic/Magnetic/Quantum Materials and/or Electrochemically Functional Materials. This is from a recent advertisement for Faculty positions. I am wondering why there is a requirement for the candidate to be 'preferably' below 35 years when applying? Minimum age for a PhD graduate with no work experience is likely to be around 26 or more. So the goal is to not spend more than 9-10 years before or after PhD if you want to apply at this place. This seems like an artificial bar with no tangible purpose. Ideas on why this limit is in place?
