#todayinhistory #grrf 10 May - First War of Independence The Great Indian Rebellion of 1857 was a major uprising in India in 1857–58 against the colonial rule. The Great Rebellion began on 10 May 1857 in the form of a ‘Mutiny of Sepoys’ in the garrison town of Meerut. It then erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions across India, though various incidents of revolt also occurred farther north and east. It was a beginning of Independence War of India. Momentarily it was contained with the rebels' defeat in Gwalior on 20 June 1858. But, the First War of Independence had begun. It was perhaps one of the defining moments of Indian freedom struggle. Besides grease of the new kind of cartridge they were compelled to use, the more important causes were people's discontentment with the land taxes taken by cololian government, the seizure of many kingdoms and princely states and above all, people's desire for freedom from foreign rule. The significance of 1857 is that unlike many a battle against the colonial ruler, for the first time, simultaneously there were rebellions in many regions, imparting an all-India character to the uprising. 1857 was remarkable not only due to its unprecedented scale, covering almost half of India, but also due to its impact on popular mind everywhere. It was a source of inspiration for the freedom struggle that followed. Moreover, the unity that was displayed between the different communities during the uprising was quite remarkable. For all these reasons 1857 and the stories of heroism and martyrdom and struggle for independence have a place in the hearts of the people of India. #grrf #freedom #inspiration #independence #mutiny #mangalpandey #meerut #people #india

The year 1857 witnessed the first war of independence, which is perhaps one of the defining moments of Indian freedom struggle. Scholars and historians ascribe many causes and among these causes one that triggered the chain of incidents was reaction of the Indian soldiers of the East India Company's army, to the grease of the new kind of cartridge they were compelled to use. Perhaps the more important causes were people's discontentment with the land taxes taken by the British government, the seizure of many kingdoms and princely states by the British, and above all, people's desire for freedom from foreign rule. #grrf

For some political reason this is being said as the first war of independence...while it is good to remember the day we also need to know and appreciate others who sacrificed well before this for independence
