It has been played at almost every children's party for over 20 years - but there's one mysterious dance move that still baffles most.

Cha Cha Slide by American artist DJ Casper spent five weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart following its release in August 2000.

The iconic song, which was originally written as a step aerobics routine, guides listeners through the dance moves, instructing them to slide, hop and stomp throughout the song.

But 23 years on and one instruction in the song is still confusing people, prompting a Reddit user to ask: "In the Cha Cha Slide dance, what is the Charlie Brown move actually supposed to be? After 200 times through this dance, it still eludes me."

In response, one equally flummoxed user said: "Now we're asking the important questions."

Another added: "Do the same exact, repeated motion over and over again. So long as it looks weird, it'll work."

A third user said: "My kids spin around in a circle while on their tip toes."

According to the official music video to Mr C. The Slide Man - Cha Cha Slide Part 2, Charlie Brown is a hopping move with alternating feet and with arm motion.

It is considered to be a version of the running man made popular by MC Hammer, and sees dancers rock forward on one foot while kicking back with the other.

Sharing this all-important news on Reddit, one user said: "The mythical Charlie Brown. In my experience that part simply references a silly dance move that would be most appropriate on one of the Charlie Brown characters.

"There are a few moves called the Charlie Brown, but for the Cha Cha Slide typically what I see is the running man, but with leg braces.

"Part of the reason that nobody is really sure what to do with this part is because it is a variable, ie: do a silly looking Charlie Brown dance which could be any number of types of move.

"When people try to learn it, they find that many people are doing different things so nobody is quite sure. You might end up with some groups of people doing one thing, some doing another.

"But finally, we see here in the actual video that the Charlie Brown is something else entirely - something like a forward and backward bounce on one leg each. We can only assume that this is the official stance on the matter."

Thanking him for setting the record straight, one user commented: "You have cleared up a life long mystery for me. You're an American hero."

Another user added: "I didn't know I wanted to know this until I realised it was a different move everywhere I've lived at.

"Interestingly, the result is something like the actual Charlie Brown scene in which everyone is doing their own little weird thing for a moment.

"The truth of this matter may not be for mortals to know, but it's too late now."
