Conjunctivitis is commonly known as pink eye; a condition that causes redness and inflammation of conjunctive, which is a thin layer of tissue covering the front of eye. It may be caused due to various reasons;

  • Infective conjunctivitis-bacterial or viral infection,
  • Allergic conjunctivitis-allergy to substances such as pollen or dust mites,
  • Chemical conjunctivitis-irritants such as shampoo or chlorinated water.
Conjunctivitis

Although, the symptoms can be irritating and the condition is contagious, but it rarely affects vision. Symptoms of conjunctivitis include;

  • Redness of eye
  • White or green discharge in eyes that may stick the eyelids making it difficult to open them in morning
  • Vision is usually not affected, except developing blurry vision due to discharge
  • Itching and sensation of burning in the eye
  • Watery or teary eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Swollen eyelids

Complications occur when the person experiences a lot of white or green discharge from eye, high fever, shaking chills, vision loss, or face pain. In some cases, conjunctivitis is accompanied by severe pain in eye, changes in vision other than smearing, loss of focus, distorted images and vomiting. One must visit the doctor in such conditions. The treatment for conjunctivitis depends on the cause of the problem. Generally, it gets better within a couple of weeks, without any treatment.
