The world’s best designers march to the beat of a different drum, but once they find their set of specific buyer, they really don’t go that radically offbeat anymore.

Predictably Nisha Jamvwal also caters to her ‘market’.

The latest line that she has brought to Chennai is commercial, but it also manages to be interesting and different enough. It’s not going to radically alter the way we wear clothes, but she is definitely contributing to a rack of very wearable and tangible fashion.

Nisha comes from an illustrious family with roots in Chennai. Momma Jamvwal, her biggest cheerleader is a resident of Namma Chennai. Cushioned into life in Mumbai, Nisha wears many a hat - columnist, art collector, interior decorator and of course, the most sought-after seamstress of the socialites.

She is not into sky-high hair, retreating hemlines or stick-thin models. But she is big on sex-appeal. To the scores of women who were entranced by the enigmatic contours of Nisha’s face, they failed to see the real face - that of a woman, with a strong resolve.

Despite the long-drawn out drama (which we cannot publish), her show went on. No amount of political manoeuvring by vested interests or big shots in the hotel industry prevented her ‘I believe I can fly’ showcase. The way she handled the entire show with elan, Nisha made it clear that she knows how to sozzle with the socialites, deal firmly with the paparazzi and pamper her models.

A day before the event, everything that could go wrong, went wrong with the show- make up and styling fell through, her retail partner let her down, she knew no models and the only hope she held on to was her ‘belief in the people of Chennai’.

But within 24 hours, she managed to pull in the movers and shakers, the spenders and the sizzling-cliques of our glorious city. As Chennai cheered on this luscious lass, the moving image of her mom on the edge of the ramp, clapping for her daughter conveyed one thing — if you believe you can fly, you will.
