President Obama is spending a second day in New Delhi, where he is addressing Indian parliament during the first portion of his 10-day trip through Asia. Obama praised the relationship between the United States and India, calling for greater economic ties and voicing support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council. Obama also emphasized that closer economic cooperation would create jobs, not take them away from American workers. BP Oil Spill Hearings Three companies involved in this summer’s BP oil spill will be under the microscope as a presidential commission begins hearings Monday on what led up to the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion and how the ensuing oil spill was handled. Executives will be grilled on the commission’s findings, which will be formally released on Jan. 11. Myanmar Holds Election Myanmar’s ruling junta held the first election in two decades, three years after a brutal crackdown on protesters and Buddhist monks gained international attention. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized the vote as “flawed.” The government of Gen. Than Shwe has said it will release opposition activist and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi from longtime house arrest. Grounding of A380s Costs Qantas The Australian airline has seen a drop in shares after grounding its fleet of A380 superjumbos after one of the plane’s engines began shooting flames mid-flight last week. Qantas has seen its shares drop by 4 percent, and investigators expect the planes to remain grounded until at least Thursday. Security Handover Begins in Afghanistan Though a larger-scale handover is scheduled to begin in 2011, U.S. forces have placed small outposts under the control of Afghan security forces as part of a gradual transition of power that NATO leaders hope to have complete in 2014. Afghanistan will top the agenda when member nations convene at a NATO summit in Lisbon next week.
