The idea comes from a phrase (ironically) coined by philosopher Gilbert Ryle, a description of how your spirit lives in your body. I imagine we are all, like cassettes, thoughts wrapped up in awkward packaging.

Nobutoshi Kihara, who died on February 13 aged 84, was the engineering genius behind some of Sony’s greatest hits: transistor radios and televisions, camcorders and other bantamweight electronics that made the company a world-leader and “Made in Japan” a stamp of distinction.

The TCS-310 did form the basis for an early budget Walkman model, the WM-1.The prototype of the Walkman was built in 1978 by audio-division engineer Nobutoshi Kihara for Sony co-chairman Masaru Ibuka, who wanted to be able to listen to operas during his plane trips. It was marketed 1979 as the Walkman in Japan, although Akio Morita hated the name. Source
