Palaruvi is located in the south-eastern slope of Aryankavu Range, Thenmala Division, close to Kerala-Tamilnadu border. The total extend of the Division is 140.75 km with undulating terrain and the altitude varies from 100-900m altitude. Community Based Ecotourism Programmes are initiated for empowering local people and tribal community which helps in protecting the forest and biodiversity.The attractive waterfall and the ecotourism programmes invites lots of tourist and became a favorite picnic spot for visitors from south India. Historically, the forest was under the Maharaja of Travancore. Holding up Palaruvi as their summer getaway, Travancore kings built a palace in Palaruvi during 17th century. You can witness the remnants of an old stable just before reaching the waterfalls.
Palaruvi Waterfalls
Bounteous water fall from top of the rock lives up to its name resembles stream of milk and thus it attained its name “Palaruvi”, cascading down from altitude of 300 feet and splitting further into capillaries of cascades in the downstream. The waterfall has a narrow head and a broader tail region and hence it is also known as a horsetail type waterfall. It is the third highest waterfall in Kerala followed by Meenmutty and Soochipara waterfalls of Wayanadu district.
In summer, it is a quiet recluse, far from the madding crowd with ferns and mosses damp grasses and sunlight dappled through overhanging branches into small pools below. The area was a retreat for the Maharajas of Travancore. The remnants of yesteryears grandeur in the form of mandapams on rock and horse stable of Maharajas period can be seen here.
The exquisitedense tropical evergreen forest surrounding the falls with its astounding species diversity indeed catches the attention of tourists and became a favorite picnic spot for visitors from south India. Every year, three to four lakh people used to visit the falls for a dip in the water originating from the virgin forests of Western Ghats.
