Alex B One of my Childhood Favourites, I'll never forget seeing this short film as a kid and watch it all the time, personally my favourite Wallace and Gromit short. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/30/23 Full Review Matthew B A Grand Day Out is a comparatively modest work. Ambitious plans to include additional characters and a lunar fast food restaurant were shelved so that the work could be completed. The animation is made from Plasticine, and brought to life by stop-motion methods. I suspect a little two-dimensional animation was used in a few of the long shots, but I am not certain. At the time of writing, I have a piece of Wensleydale cheese in my fridge. I owe this to Wallace & Gromit. The company which makes Wensleydale was heading for bankruptcy until its mention in a later W&G show led to a revival in sales. Cheese is an important motivation in the W&G stories. It is a deal breaker in one of Wallace's doomed love affairs. In this first adventure, it determines the location of Wallace's grand day out. While planning a Bank Holiday excursion, Wallace discovers to his horror that there is no cheese in the house. A holiday location that contains plenty of cheese is in order, and where better than the moon, which is literally made of the stuff? This leads to the first great invention of the franchise, as Wallace works on a rocket. His blueprints are not exactly detailed – just a crude drawing of a rocket with a few faces looking out. Much of the rocket appears to be made out of wood too. Still, Gromit (who is reading Electronics for Dogs) is able to help. The rocket is complete, and after a brief crisis (Wallace nearly forgets to bring crackers for his cheese), they are off. In line with the gentle cosiness of its inventor, the rocket has been designed to look like Wallace's living room, complete with armchair. The moon proves to be a hospitable place with a breathable atmosphere, rather like the seaside but without water. There is inevitably a threat on the moon. This is posed by a robot, which attempts to brain Wallace, and to rip sections of their rocket away. Compared with later menaces, the robot is a benevolent enemy. It is coin-operated, and no danger once the money runs out. If only Wallace would stop inserting coins! In the end, all the robot really dreams about is the time that it spent skiing before it ended up on the moon. Do robots have memories and dreams of happier times? Is the moon made of cheese?
