KOLKATA: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, senior West Bengal Minister Bratya Basu on Friday called Governor JagdeepDhankhar 'Noirajyapal', a Bengali compound word that refers to lawlessness and anarchy and the Governor.

The remark was made at a time when Dhankhar went to Gandhi Ghat at Barrackpore to pay homage to the Father of the Nation. Basu was present along with State Chief Secretary AlapanBandopadhyay and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Abdul Mannan.

"Ask him what his views are on the role of the District Magistrate in Hathras (in Uttar Pradesh), who is trying to intimidate the family members of the (gang rape) victim. Why by making such comments, he is putting a prefix of 'Noi' to his name, turning his role from 'Rajyapal' to 'Noirajyapal'," Basu told journalists while Dhankhar was present just a few yards away.

Earlier, the Governor criticized the Mamata Banerjee government on various issues ranging from growing political violence to 'denial' of benefits to the state farmers. Dhankhar had recently said that West Bengal has become "home to illegal bomb-making" that has the potential to unsettle democracy and the state administration cannot escape its accountability for the "alarming decline" in law and order in Bengal.
