2. Selection from Original Project Proposal:
This research team was formed with the intent of providing all of the
participants the opportunity to develop and gain experience in an area of
professional research outside of their normal experience. Specifically,
experience in the areas including design-led research and participant
co-creators are of particular interest. In order to facilitate this desire, a
project was devised that bridges the interests of the group members and
provides both a personally and professionally stimulating point of
interest for each contributor.
The project’s direct objective is to gather two small groups of
individuals, likely students at The Ohio State University, that are similar
in almost all ways except that half of the group will have a condition that
deems them medically “Disabled” and the other half will be considered,
for the sake of clarity, Normal, or Able. The concept is to then provide a
comparative look at the two groups and see if there is a
significant difference in the way each group derives satisfaction
out of everyday life. Utilizing research tools that depend heavily on
the output of participants is key to our understanding of the subjects.
3. Stakeholders Original
• Students with speech/hearing difficulties
• Find them through emails, flyers, Office of
Disability Services, professional contacts.
4. Stakeholders Issues
• The ODS was not the outlet we hoped for.
• Flyers went untouched.
• Social media outlets were not trafficked highly but
did provide some of our best insights.
• Realization: finding enough, let alone any, students
required to make a comparison is unlikely.
5. Stakeholders Revised
• A shift in our research objective from a
comparison between “disabled” and “abled”
students became a simpler exploration of daily life
satisfaction and what that means.
• We have three excited male co-creators.
• We need 3-5 more individuals for a successful
make tools session.
• The final co-creators will be found from willing
undergraduate or graduate design students.
6. Process/Methods Do
• Original Task: Take a Camera Home: have
participant document a day in their life with
images that relate to their satisfaction.
• Current Task: Gather 6 images either
original or preexisting, that show variable
levels of personal satisfaction. These will be
used again in the make tool session.
7. Process/Methods Say
• Original Task: Distribute survey to gather
data on co-creators and their satisfaction.
• Current Task: Survey as introductory task,
workbook as more detailed introspection,
and finally social media as outlet for co-
creators, team, and others to contribute.
8. Process/Methods Make
• Original Task: Session using velcro make
tools to have co-creators dimensionally
explore their concepts of satisfaction.
• Current Task: Group projects where the
surveys, workbooks, and imagery collected
from the volunteers are repurposed into
session projects.
9. Timeline Original
• 1/15.........................make contacts, distribute flyers
• 1/22..............................survey, tweet, facebook, blog
• 2/5...............................................send a camera home
• 2/19..................................make tools, presentation 2
• 3/12...................................................final presentation
11. Deliverables
• Blog: summary and analysis of quarter’s
work. It will include all data gathered and
commentary about process.
• Make tools, Images, Social media content,
workbook, survey, presentations.
12. Next Steps
• Retain interested co-creators and obtain
3-5 more participants for final make tools.
• Administer new workbook and photo task.
• Finalize and execute make tools session.
