These days, you can't really escape Disney live adaptations, and next on the list is Snow White. Following re-imaginings of Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and many more, Disney is now tapping into one of its most secular movies, 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, to get the live-action treatment.

The upcoming musical film will be directed by Marc Webb, features a script penned by Barbie‘s Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson, and has casting led by Gal Gadot and West Side Story and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes breakout star Rachel Zegler.

Disney's live-action adaptation of Snow White has been in the works since 2016 and a lot has happened since it was announced, so here's everything you need to know about the film — from casting news to trailer announcements and release date changes.

Snow White will be a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1937 animated classic, which in turn was based on the popular 19th-century fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. You can expect the plot to remain faithful to its predecessors for the most part, but the film's stars have spoken at length about certain aspects of the reboot being updated for today's audiences. But we'll dive more into that later.

The live-action Snow White will be directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man) and, aside from the beloved songs from the 1937 movie's soundtrack, will also feature additional original songs by songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, known for their work on La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen, and The Greatest Showman.

The live-action Snow White will star actress and singer Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. Both castings were announced in 2021; the full cast list has yet to be shared with the public.

Yet, we do know that Andrew Burnap will play Jonathan, Ansu Kabia will portray the Huntsman, Martin Klebba will play Grumpy, and Colin Michael Carmichael has been cast in an undisclosed role. No word yet on who is portraying the other six dwarfs Doc, Bashful, Sleepy, Sneezy, Happy, and Dopey. Stay tuned!

How will the live-action Snow White differ from the 1937 original?

As mentioned above, it's likely that the live-action version will adopt the same main plot as the original. However, while speaking at Disney's D23 Expo in 2022, title star Rachel Zegler said that the original Snow White “does not work for today's audience," so they created “a new version of the character.”

“We did a really deep dive into fixing and making a modern woman out of Snow White,” Zegler explained. “I think she's 13 in the original cartoon, so we started there and said, 'No, she's 18 in this one.' She's a bit more independent. She's also living in grief. I mean, there was a lot of complex emotion that we decided to deep-dive into. And understanding what it's like to be a teenager on top of all that.”

“We absolutely wrote a Snow White that she’s not going to be saved by the prince, and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love," Zegler continued while speaking to Variety on the D23 red carpet. "She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be and the leader that her late father told her that she could be if she was fearless, fair, brave, and true.”

When will Snow White be released?

After being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, filming for Snow White was completed in the United Kingdom in July 2022, right before Zegler moved on to film The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

The film was originally slated to premiere theatrically on March 22, 2024. However, on October 27, 2023, Disney announced the release had been pushed back to March 21, 2025. According to Deadline, the studio cites the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike as the reason for the delay.

Is there a trailer for Snow White?

At the moment, there is no trailer for the live-action adaptation of Snow White — and given that its theatrical release has been pushed back by almost a full year, the trailer might not arrive for a while.
