The CPM on Friday said Mamata Banerjee had assured the party of all support to set up a museum on former chief minister Jyoti Basu in New Town.

The chief minister on Friday met three CPM leaders — Rabin Deb, Sujan Chakraborty and Asok Bhattacharya — in her Assembly chamber and gave them a patient hearing.

A five-acre plot in New town had been allotted by the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government to the Jyoti Basu Centre for Studies and Research in 2011.

“We had gone to meet the chief minister only to urge her for the physical handover of the land. All necessary payment had been made during our regime itself to set up the museum,”said Chakraborty.

“She assured us that we would be able to lay foundation stone for the museum on July 8 — the birth anniversary of Jyoti Basu. But the government was insisting on opting for an alternative plot in the interiors citing some legal tangles. We did not agree on alternative land,” Chakraborty added.

According to him, there was no legal tangle over the New town land till 2011.

Sources said urban development minister Firhad Hakim had been given the task of resolving the “dispute” over the land.

Deb said some officials of Hidco, which owns land in New Town, had already given the CPM a proposal to opt for the alternative land and shown a marshy plot in the interiors.

Mamata refused to talk about the closed door meeting with the CPM leaders. “I am not going to tell you about this. I maintain certain decorum.”
