Shree Badrinath Temple is considered one of the sacred Char Dham in Uttarakhand and is also among the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is located at an elevation of 3,100 m in the Garhwal Himalayas, on the banks of the Alaknanda river and lies between Nar and Narayana mountain ranges. The 1 ft (0.30 m) Shaligram (black stone) deity of Badrinarayana is enshrined under a gold canopy beneath a Badri Tree in the main temple. The image of the god of Badrinarayana depicts Him holding a Shankha (conch) and a Chakra (wheel) in two of His raised arms, with the other two reclining in the Yogamudra (Padmasana) position on His lap. The shrine also has statues of Kubera, the sage Narada, Uddhava, Nara, and Narayana. Mata Murti Ka Mela is a prominent festival that commemorates the descent of the river Ganges on mother earth. The Badri Kedar festival is celebrated in both the Badrinath and Kedarnath temples. The festival lasts for eight days; artists from all over the country perform during the function.
