Leading the memorial ceremony was OrBorJor President Paiboon Upatising, who said the event had a huge impact on Phuket. Not only was there loss of life and injuries, but it also affected properties, the economy and the environment, Mr Paiboon said.

“This disaster made us fearful and we will always remember it. But after this event, we were humbled by everyone, both people in Thailand and around the world, who came to help us.

“We will prevent future disasters with our warning systems, and hold regular tsunami drills to educate people how to prepare for the worst, and instill confidence in tourists who visit Phuket.”

A minute’s silence was held at the event, as people buried candles in the sand and built sandcastles around them, while remembering the 2004 tsunami victims.
