The standout feature at this large five-star resort is the saltwater lagoon pool that extends right along one side of the property. With shallow water that is just right for paddling and pottering, Fañabe is a great beach if you have small children. The five-star Iberostar Selection Anthelia is on a headland just a couple of minutes’ walk away, with the equally attractive Duque beach on the other side. Most of the 365 rooms and suites have sea views and some are interconnecting, providing privacy and practicality; most rooms have a double plus a single bed. Best for fairytale holidays
Little ones who like to wear princess outfits every day will love the vibe at this five-star hotel, where a Disney-style castle brings a bit of magic to the central pool area and evening entertainment is like a proper theatre show. There are seven pools altogether, with a couple for children as well as a splash park — adults can escape to their own stylish infinity pool. Decor is in calming stone shades with pops of ochre in the 372 large rooms, with family options that sleep up to five. Some of the junior suites have shared pools. With a steak house and Italian and Asian options as well as the buffet restaurant, there’s no danger of getting bored with the food here. If you are wary about all-inclusives, thinking you’ll be stuck in a complex, you will love it here as you can just walk out onto the promenade with shops, bars, restaurants, several beaches and the town centre all a short stroll away. The adult-only Guayarmina Princess is a large hotel where you can enjoy the facilities in a calmer environment than you may have experienced in family resorts. The gleaming white building, with classical Greek architectural features and two main pools, is right by Fañabe beach and has 505 rooms with chic blue and white decor — guests in junior suites have access to an infinity pool as well as another bar and restaurant. After a workout in the well-equipped gym, you could spend all afternoon in the spa, bubbling away in the pool and getting your hair and nails done. Fancy doing absolutely nothing? In the west of the island right by Arena beach and close to Los Gigantes cliffs, this large four-star hotel has the option of staying in the adult-only Platinum Club section. The older members of your family might just appreciate having some gin-and-tonic time by an infinity pool overlooking the ocean, away from the full-on action. The children, meanwhile, can have a go at archery or tennis, get stuck into a baking workshop or hurtle down the chutes in the kids’ pool. The contemporary, uncluttered look in the rooms (with a sofabed for one or two children) means you start relaxing the minute you walk in.

This four-star hotel is next to Golf Las Americas and close to the Siam waterpark with a shuttle bus to take the hassle out of getting there. The bus goes down to the beach too, which is about a quarter of an hour away. Accommodation is in 121 villas with neutral contemporary décor and kitchen facilities. Some are designed for families with small children and those with two bedrooms have a private pool and sleep up to five. Vegan, coeliac and other diets are catered for in the restaurant. An outdoor gym, yoga sessions, a spa and good cycling facilities should cover most interests. Green Garden tries to use local produce, has no single-use plastics and employs energy-saving practices. Best for families with young children
The Gran Oasis Resort has a warm family feel and plenty of activities. Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos are about half an hour’s walk away — you can just jump on the shuttle bus to get the beach — and the hotel is next door to Golf Las Americas. The oasis theme runs throughout the property, with lots of palm trees around the two pools in the tropical gardens. Smaller children can splash around in the padding pool, while there are lots of activities to help older kids burn off excess energy — including a mini disco to wear them out before bed.The 206 stylish suites (some duplex) in low-rise white buildings have one or two bedrooms and sleep up to six. While there is only one restaurant, food is also available at the two pool bars. The hotel has a beauty area with treatments but no indoor spa pool.

You get five-star facilities with a jolly family atmosphere and a friendly team at this hotel on the hillside by El Duque beach in the Fañabe area of Costa Adeje, where the 458 rooms and suites are light and spacious with classic decor. With four swimming pools, crazy golf, tennis courts, a gym and a spa, there is more than enough to keep everyone smiling. La Finca buffet offers plenty of choice and La Laja’s à la carte restaurant is excellent (not part of all-inclusive packages unless you book a suite, but a discount is available).

Best for Tenerife’s best views
Between Los Gigantes and Playa de la Arena on the west coast, Puerto de Santiago has a more authentic feel than some other resorts. A few minutes’ walk from the beach, the hotel is built into the hillside and many of the 400 rooms — with contemporary Scandi decor — have fabulous views of Los Gigantes cliffs, the island of La Gomera or Mount Teide. Some of the garden rooms have a hot tub on the terrace. You can enjoy the view from an outdoor table in the buffet restaurant too, where the pizzas baked to order in the Italian corner are very popular. Whatever your children are into, there is sure to be something they like at the Barcy club, with activities based around ecology, science, theatre, dance and art. All-inclusive guests can use the adjacent tennis courts for no extra charge.
