New Delhi: Kalka Shimla Hill Railways is one of the most iconic railway routes in the country which has completed 116 years. This railway line started in 1903 and it holds the Guinness Book of World Records for offering steepest rise in altitude in the space of 96 kilometres. With its scenic beauty and toy train service, Kalka Shimla Hill Railways is a popular tourist attraction.

The 96 km long narrow gauge track passes through about 102 tunnels, 900 curves, 800 bridges and viaducts. It is one of the most scenic railway routes in the country and is also known as the 'crown jewel' of the Indian Railways. The maximum height of the track on this route is  2000 m above the sea level. It is even declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. 

Tourists can enjoy the beauty of nature from toy trains coaches which offer the comfort of chair cars. If someone wants a luxurious ride on the route, the Shivalik Queen train provides privacy in the form of coupes. Railways has also introduced vistadome coaches with glass ceiling for an ethereal experience on the train.

People looking for royal experience during the ride can enjoy Railways' Shivalik Palace which is a separate luxurious compartment with beautiful interiors, provision of sleepers and comfortable sofas. This train also has a well-equipped kitchen and an attendant to serve foods and drinks.
