The Brentwood residence where Marilyn Monroe lived and passed away has taken a significant step toward being recognised as a historical cultural monument. In a unanimous decision, the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission has voted to designate the Spanish-style home at 12305 W. 5th Helena Drive, marking it as a historic property.

While this designation temporarily delays potential demolition for 180 days, the property's safeguarding is contingent on the LA Planning and Use Committee and City Council's review of its nomination, reported Entertainment Weekly. The current owner, Glory of the Snow Trust, had obtained a demolition permit in September 2023. However, the L.A. City Council promptly suspended the permit to stall the trust's construction plans.

Historic Significance Unveiled

Historian Scott Fortner, collaborating with the Monroe Preservation Group, has delved into the property's history. Research indicates that renowned Los Angeles architect Harbin Hunter not only resided in the home but likely designed it. Built in 1929, Monroe acquired the house for $77,500 in February 1962 following her divorce from playwright Arthur Miller. She invested approximately $51,000 (equivalent to around $500,000 in 2024) in refurbishing and remodeling the residence. Monroe tragically passed away at the age of 36 in August of the same year.
