Umpiring in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has come under immense scrutiny over the past week with the latest incident involving Virat Kohli which has once again sparked controversy.
This was after Kohli, in the match between KKR and RCB, lashed out at the on-field umpires after being given out on a slower full toss, which he played back to the bowler Harshit Rana. The ball was deemed legal height-wise as the batter was standing far outside the crease.
However, Kohli was incensed at the umpire’s decision and made his feelings known before walking off as the Hawk-Eye technology went in the bowler’s favour.
However, Kohli's reaction to his dismissal added an extra layer of drama to the match as it garnered widespread attention and sparked debates among pundits and fans alike, with former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif stepping forward to shed light on the matter.
"Clear unplayable beamer gets Kohli out and a ball that passed under Dhoni's bat declared wide. Cameras, replays, technology but still such mistakes being made. Poor umpiring," said Kaif on X while citing two incidents involving Kohli and MS Dhoni.
Other former cricketers also reacted to the incident.
"This law needs to be looked at and it needs to be changed. Benefit of doubt should have gone to Kohli. He was not out," said former India player Navjot Singh Sidhu.
“Grey areas in the game open up room for anger and confusion. It’s not a tough fix this. Get the batter’s stance, draw the lines and use ball tracking. No confusion whatsoever,” wrote on AB de Villiers on X.
However, former India seamer Irfan Pathan said that the decision was fair one and explained his stance by saying, “BCCI has measured the body weight and waist height of each player in IPL 2024, so those data have been used here, so the technology can’t can’t be so wrong and it was clear OUT,” Irfan Pathan said while speaking to Star Sports.
