Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad stirred a massive controversy after he praised underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. For the unversed, Miandad's son Junaid Miandad is married to Mahrukh Ibrahim, daughter of Dawood Ibrahim. The veteran cricketer said that he has known Dawood Ibrahim for a long time, adding Ibrahim is not like what people think him to be.
“I have known him for a long time, from Dubai. It is an honour for me that his daughter married my son. My daughter-in-law is very well-educated; she studied in a convent school and went to a renowned university,” Mianadad told Pakistani journalist Hassan Nisar on the latter's YouTube channel.
“Understanding the real Dawood Ibrahim is not easy. The way people think about the family, they are not like that,” he remarked.
Dawood Ibrahim is a wanted criminal in India. He is known as the mastermind behind the deadly March 1993 serial bomb blasts which claimed more than 250 lives in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, Miandad had an illustrious career while playing for Pakistan. He represented the country in 124 Tests and 233 ODIs in a career that lasted for over two decades. The veteran batter scored 8832 runs and 23 centuries in Test cricket, to go along with 7381 runs with eight centuries in ODIs.
Miandad also revealed why he decided to become a cricketer and said that cricket runs in the family blood.
“Cricket is a family game for me. My father played it, my elder brother Bashir Miandad played cricket. Then my two younger brothers Anwar and Sohail, both played first-class cricket,” he said.
Miandad also spoke about former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan who is currently in jail and facing various charges of corruption, vandalism and anti-state campaigning. Miandad pointed out Imran Khan's bad habit and said that the 1992 World Cup-winning captain did not listen to anyone. Miandad, however, praised Imran Khan's helping nature.
“Imran Khan’s bad habit that I can identify is that he didn’t listen to anyone and forced what he believed is right onto others. He just did not agree that someone else could be right too,” he said.
“Imran Khan’s good quality was that he helped others,” he added.
