Twinkle Khanna hits the ball out of the park every time—whether it's her witty responses in question or her perfectly styled hair and flawless skin. Recently, we got together with the actor to talk all things beauty, from the one skincare product she religiously uses every day to her current favourite hair colour trends. Ahead, edited excerpts from our conversation.

What's your current favourite hair colour trend?

My mum has indigo blue hair and I think that at 60 that's really cool, so I think I'm kind of loving that and I hope I'm as cool when I'm her age.

Do you regret any hair colours or hairstyles you've tried in the past?

I recently cut my hair and I ended up giving a talk at Oxford [University], where though I wish I had Margaret Thatcher's mind, I ended up with her hairstyle.

What's the one beauty habit you never skip?

I don't skip on putting the L'Oréal Professionnel Smartbond in my hair colour, because I colour my hair a lot—I think that saves me from a lot of damage.

What is your everyday makeup routine like?

There is none, unless I'm really going out. Otherwise it's just tinted sunblock, and maybe kohl and lip gloss.

You've spoken about your mum's secret hair oil recipe in a previous interview with Vogue. Would you like to share it with us?

I'm not giving away anything for free, thank you.

What about any masks or concoctions you like to whip up at home for your hair or skin?

Not anymore, since I've got L'Oréal Professionnel. I think I'm using Smartbond and I'm using Powerdose, and those are things you can do at home as well.

Do you have any beauty-related memories with your mother from when you were younger?

Like every other Indian household, memories of sitting and oiling our hair together, and then combing it, yeah, I have a lot of those. We were all women in our house, so there would be an entire day spent just kind of pampering ourselves and my grandmother would pass on tips to us as well.

Anything she said that stuck on with you?

Some horrible things like putting… it was a really smelly thing I can't remember, but it was like onion juice or something that stinks for days; we tried that as well.

Did that work?

I don't think so.

Your hair always looks perfectly put together. How often do you get it blow-dried?

Not very often—I can blow-dry my hair, I can curl my hair, I can do pretty much everything. If I have to blow-dry my hair, I probably do it once a week and I do it myself. [But] I cannot colour my hair, and I don't think anybody should colour their hair. I think that's really something you have to leave to the professionals.

What's the one haircare habit you want to adopt, but haven't yet?

If I wasn't with L'Oréal Professionnel, I don't think I would end up even really setting my hair as much. I mean there are days when I don't even comb my hair, so if I just comb my hair every day, it's progress.

Do you have any favourite skincare products?

I mean they keep changing, but I think what's really essential is to put on a sunblock, and I really wish I had done that since I was much younger.

What's the most indulgent thing you've bought for your skin or hair?

I don't really indulge myself when it comes to my skin and hair. My greatest indulgence would be buying books and probably chocolate.

What's the most inexpensive beauty product in your vanity kit?

My sense of humour. I don't know if it's a beauty product but it seems to work wonders.

Do you enjoy using face masks?

I think everybody's walking around with their mask on in this world, so no I don't use face masks.

What does a day of indulgence look like to you?

Lying on a beach, getting a nice tan, jumping into the sea and there's salt in my hair, not worrying about the way I look, and not caring what other people think. That would be a day of indulgence.

How do you protect your hair from the heat and humidity?

I don't; I ride my scooter with my hair getting fried, I jump into the sea. I think you do have to look after yourself but you do also have to live. That's more important than really caring so much about the way you look all the time.

Are there any fun hair colours you've recently spotted online and want to try?

Well right now, I'm Parisian Chocolat, but I think I want to go back to my red. It's not something I've spotted, but I'm missing my red hair.

Is there a makeup product you never leave the house without?

Sunblock, that's it. It's not makeup but yeah, tinted sunblock.
