Throwback: 32 pictures from inside Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi’s beautiful intimate wedding

Think of a Karan Johar film, and you’re likely to conjure up plots that pull novel-worthy love stories and on-reel couples to the forefront. But did you know that the renowned director has also played matchmaker to actors Neha Dhupia and her now-husband Angad Bedi in real life? What ensued was a spur-of-the-moment (albeit stunning) wedding ceremony on May 10, 2018. Fast forward to 2020, as this low-key couple celebrates two years since they tied the knot, we take a look back at their serendipitous meet-cutes spread over several years, the traditional proposal by Bedi, and glimpses into their beautiful, simple Anand Karaj.

The tale of two cities

Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi’s was not a classic meet-cute shared by many actors in Bollywood, be it a movie set or trans-continent flight paths. The gym served as the backdrop to the couple’s first encounter. Bedi claims he first saw Dhupia in New Delhi when she was just 20. Years later, the duo reunited at a mutual friend’s party in Mumbai. “It was just us standing in the balcony. I saw a different side of him—beyond the jokes and wit, there was a sensitive man,” revealed Dhupia in an interview. “We were both away from home, so I always relied on him for support. He lived a bachelor life and the one place he could always get home food was mine. We became close friends—there was no façade and no attempt to impress one another. Well, no attempts on my part! In fact, he was the first call after a major heartbreak and he talked me through it—I’m sure there was a hidden motive,” she went on to reveal.

The proposal

When Angad Bedi popped the question to Neha Dhupia, it turned out to be a proposal every parent could wish for. “I was shooting in Punjab and told him about a role for him. He didn’t ask for any details. He only cared about spending time with me and flew down immediately. After that shoot, he showed up at my parents’ doorstep and asked for my hand in marriage… I had no idea about it!” While she turned him down initially, during a party, “Karan Johar took us aside and screamed, ‘Can you not see this?! Are you blind?’ You should’ve seen the look on Angad’s face. He had ‘I told you so!’ tattooed on his forehead.” Dhupia finally succumbed to her feelings for Bedi, and this time around he didn’t go down on one knee. “He told me I’d already wasted four years and declared ‘Chalo Dilli!’ to meet his parents. Then he said, ‘Before you change your mind, pick an outfit because we’re getting married in two days!’”

The mehandi and pre-wedding puja

The couple kicked off their wedding celebrations with a vibrant mehandi ceremony in New Delhi. The bride chose a fuss-free cobalt blue outfit from Masaba for an effortless henna application, and rounded off with a maang tikka and earrings. The groom complemented her in a navy sherwani for the occasion.

Subsequent to the low-key mehandi party was a pre-wedding puja. Neha Dhupia chose a lighter-than-air beige silk sari by Anavila. Traditional gold jewels served as her finishing touches.

The intimate Anand Karaj

Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi wed in a traditional Sikh wedding ceremony called the Anand Karaj. A gurudwara in the capital was chosen as the venue, with just a handful of friends and family in attendance. The bride kept with her less is more aesthetic and chose a day-appropriate blush pink lehenga for the special occasion. Crafted by Anita Dongre, the bridal ensemble was decorated with the designer’s signature gota patti work. She off-set the minimal lehenga with a statement gulband necklace. Angad Bedi opted for a white sherwani but made sure to twin with his bride by choosing a pink turban. 

Speaking of how Neha Dhupia reminisces her wedding day, “Every time we’ve planned our lives, they’ve fallen apart—so we’re sticking to the unplanned! The wedding, the baby, the parenting… we’re winging it all!”
