After Zidane retired in 2006, he settled in Madrid and alternated between his advertising commitments and fatherhood. He drove the boys from school to Valdebebas and vice-versa. Enzo stood out in training. He was considered a replica of his father, an elegant playmaker. Zidane saw Enzo’s potential as a football player and was fascinated with the idea of helping in his development.
It took Mourinho months before he could convince Zidane to join his technical team in 2011. It wasn’t until he praised Enzo that Zidane agreed to join the Portuguese. In September, Enzo had the opportunity to train with the first team. Zidane found the coaching experience refreshing until he suspected that Mourinho wanted to use him for his propaganda campaigns. After the 1-1 draw against Villarreal on 21 March 2012, Mourinho told Zidane to announce that there was a conspiracy among the referees which the Frenchman refused. Soon, he disappeared from the scene and told his friends that he did not want to be a coach. For a time, Mourinho deterred him from aspiring to be a coach.
He changed his mind in 2013. This was a difficult period in Enzo’s youth career. Usually, talented young players skip the age categories and play with the older youth players. Enzo did not get to do this. He developed at the same pace as other players his age. At 17, he was often seated on the bench. Still, he possessed great quality on the pitch. Jose Aurelio Gay, who trained in Real Madrid C, believed that Enzo was never negatively affected by the pressure of being the son of a legend.
There is an overpopulation of creative midfielders in the cantera. Enzo had to compete with the likes of Medrán, Borja Sánchez, Lazo, Javi Muñoz, Aleix Febas, Fran Pérez, Llorente and Odegaard. From 2012 to 2014, Enzo did not stand out from this squad. It wasn’t until Zidane was appointed coach of Castilla that Enzo started to feature more. Little by little, he made headlines. The decision to make Enzo captain over Fran Perez surprised everyone. (There had been a leadership vacuum within the team before the decision was made.)
Today, Enzo is one of the most consistent and valuable players for Castilla. He is playing better than ever. In Valdebebas, it is rumored that Zidane would call up his son to the first team.
