Panasonic is what I expected more impressed with scratch and dent item

Chris from Kearney, NE on 2/23/2024

Verified employee review (What's this?)

This product is exactly what I thought it would be as far as the quality it provides, but what I'm more impressed with as I purchased this item as a scratch and dent. I was very pleased with the condition of this item after watching the Crutchfield videos on their scratch and dent products and the level of quality control they go through. I took a gamble and made the purchase knowing that I would most likely be happy with my item however, I did not expect as good as quality as I got. I'm very happy with their outlet program. I will continue shopping through the outlet store when the items I want are available.

Pros: Video quality is amazing.

Cons: Typical cheap plastic feel you'd expect from this model.

Panasonic no better than Sony

Dennis from APOPKA, FL on 2/2/2024

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

I received the Panasonic DP-UB820 bluray player for Christmas so I have used it now for about 5 weeks. In that time I have played about 20 UHD 4K movies. Of those two froze up temporarily during playback, but was able to get the disc to play after re-starting the disc chapter. Yesterday I played "Mission Impossible" 4K and it froze up several times at chapter 3 and in later chapters. It also pixelated and when play did resume, it had lost sound. This is the first time I had encountered this bad of a disc read problem. I called and talked to tech support at Crutchfield and they said to unplug the player and after a few minutes plug it back in and if that did not correct the problem then I can call Panasonic for one year warrantee service. Unfortunately, the "Mission Impossible" 4K disc continued to lock up, pixelate, and loose sound. The disc is new and clean so I tried it in my 4 year old Sony X800M2 Bluray player and it played flawlessly from beginning to end. Therefore the Panasonic player is not the great player I was expecting. The reason I got the new Panasonic player was it was said to not freeze up. My Sony player also freezes on some disc, but not as bad as the Panasonic has done. The Panasonic player is not as structurally sturdy or well built as the Sony player, which has a full sized metal case. The remote ia easier to use in the Sony player, as the Panasonic remote has an annoying positioned Netfix button that is too easy to accidentally touch. "

Pros: Excellent 4K and Blu-ray picture and sound Quiet operation Easy written instructions to set up (after disengaging the verbal instructions, which are of no help at all ) Remote range and power works well to bounce off projector screen and back to the player at back of room Boot up time is under 30 seconds Good on screen display info

Cons: Freezes up too many times, also pixelates, looses sound on one 4K disc that played fine on Sony player Remote is small, button layout is poor and not backlit Cost is more than comparable Sony 800M2

Good machine

Great player and features for the price. I had been using my XboxS but I wanted Dolby Vision, ATMOS, and DTS-X capability. This brought it all in one package. The special pricing made it easy to buy. My C2 OLED doesn't do HDR10+ so Vision takes care of that. I backordered it and it only took a couple days to fulfill. The only reason for one star deduction is that most of the time when a new to the player disc is inserted, it says copyright violation. Ejecting the disc and returning it to the player gets rid of this message. I had one instance where it would only output 1080p but a complete power down of everything in the chain got it up and running. If the room is completely silent you can hear the transport but not while movies are playing. Picture quality is excellent even with standard DVD's so I let it handle the upscaling. There are a lot of menu options but the default settings take care most of it. I turned off the front panel display all the time since playing time is useless. The remote leaves a lot to be desired but functions fine. I don't use the streaming functions so no comment. I've been streaming for years with an ATV4k and thought that it was great. The picture from streaming is ok but the sound suffers. Playing The Matrix 4k, video bit rates are 80-100mb/s.

Pros: Solid picture, reasonable price, fast boot time and processing. Faster than an XboxS and adds Dolby Vision/ATMOS.

Cons: Copyright violation on new disc insertion, remote

Best companion for a OLED TV

Verified employee review (What's this?)

This player is simply amazing. I had a Sony x700 before this and it froze, and had a few issues besides that. Also it didn't automatically switch between HDR and DV, this Panasonic does this and much more. DV movies look fantastic on my C3, HDR 10 content looks better than on the Sony. I have not had any problems with freezing like on the x700 so far. Regular Blu-rays and DVDs look fantastic as well. It does a very good job at upscaling then to 4k. Just be sure to properly set up your player depending on your current TV. Only "drawback" I can find with it is that it's a bit slow to read discs vs the x700, but it's not really noticeable once you get used to it. Also, the included controller is not that good, I find myself pressing the Netflix button frequently which stops the movie and takes me to the Netflix app. This is easily fixed by ordering a ub900 or ub9000 remote online which both work directly and have backlight.

Pros: Auto Switching to Dolby Vision Amazing upscaling for lower resolution content.

Cons: A bit slower than Sony x700 The controller is pretty bad

I have 40 years under my belt inside the AV Industry, so I don't get "WOWED" too often anymore. Well, this BluRay Player has blown my mind! My 12 year old top of the line Marantz Player developed a glitch, fixed itself, but with that glitch in the back of my mind I started serious research into what players are made today. I fell in love with the Pana 9000, but I didn't want to spend that much. I read a great deal about this one, and with the Crutchfield beautiful Black Friday price, I took the plunge. I cannot believe how great the picture is, truly breathtaking, and I REALLY cannot believe the sound improvement, mind boggling. I have very fancy equipment and this player is just making my gear shine like never before. Absolutely phenomenal!!!

Pros: Everything except lightweight

Cons: Lightweight.

Setup was a breeze. The player is connected through an Denon 4k a/v receiver. After the initial setup, the unit connected to my tv, detected all settings, and applied them for best performance. Upon inserting a 4k Blu-ray Disc, the television automatically turned on and switched to the correct input without the use of any remotes. Sound and picture quality are wonderful.

Pros: Super-easy setup Great picture and sound quality

Cons: No backlight on the remote.

Outright the best 4k/blu ray player I've bought, and best overall dvd, cd player I've had in years for under $500. Got it on a black Friday sale, so it was well worth it.

Pros: Functionality, style, quality build (for $500 and under), fast start up, picture quality.

Cons: Price is a bit steep at $500. If you can get it on a sale of some kind, it's well worth it. Remote doesn't light up (though you can buy one on Amazon that will work with it.)

Great player, so far

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I needed an updated 4K Blu-ray player to go with a newly-purchased 4K television, so I read a lot of reviews. I have had experience with Panasonic Blu-ray players in the past (my primary Blu-ray player before this purchase was also a Panasonic). I've only had the DP-UB820 for a week or so but, so far, it performs beautifully. I'm very pleased with it. In the picture, the UB820 is hiding in the home theater cabinet (the glass door is normally closed, of course), sitting on top of another Blu-ray player (LG). Both players are connected to the receiver on the bottom shelf. The receiver is also new and replaced an older receiver that didn't support 4K video. On top of the cabinet sits the new 4K LG Oled TV which replaced an old plasma 1080p TV (Panasonic).

Pros: - great picture from 4K Blu-rays - unit has nice, clean appearance - responds faster to remote commands than my older Panasonic Blu-ray player - was easy, intuitive to set up and pair with the Denon receiver

Cons: - none yet

The Best Option

Nick from Shelby Twp, MI on 12/4/2023

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Since I already own this player, it was a no-brainer, not to purchase (on sale) this player again for my secondary room setup of a home theater system. I have the Bose V35 Lifestyle (5.1) which does not have a 4K pass-through but does have HDMI connections. The UB820 has a separate audio-out-only HDMI connection which easily connects to any of the Bose HDMI inputs for the player. Therefore, I use another high-speed HDMI connected to my Sony OLED. I utilize an optical connection for the cable programming. Although the Bose system is antiquated (10 years old), there is an improved signal through the use of HDMI resulting in excellent sound. In my opinion, the Panasonic UB820 surpasses any of the players made by Samsung or Sony (owned 4K players by both manufacturers). Many like to believe that you should use the same brand as the TV for the compatibility factor but my experience has taught me the contrary. This player has been the best 4K player I've ever owned. The picture and sound quality are superior. I like to thank Rhett of Crutchfield for his guidance and the early delivery date for this item was on back order.

Pros: Superior picture and sound quality of 4K signals.

Cons: Plastic housing not metal. The problem with registering the player with Panasonic for warrantee is still not registered.

After an intuitive and quick setup, the difference was immediate and stunning to say the least. Great Player, Noisy Drive

Crutchfield customer from SEATTLE, WA on 10/17/2023

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

The disc drive is loud, especially when playing 4k UHD discs. I sit 9 feet (~3m) from my player, and I can hear it in the background during quiet and moderate sections of the movie. This replaced a Sony UBP X800 based on the tone mapping, optical audio out, and automatic HDR mode switching. I'm tempted to go back to the Sony with it's older video processing just for some peace and quiet. I'm surprised that the Panasonic is so much louder, especially given the significant price difference. If Sony figure out how to automatically switch Dolby Vision on and off I'll probably pick up the X800M2. For now, this unit looks great and has all the features I'm looking for.

Pros: Video quality, HDR/Dolby Vision switching, 7.1 channel audio outputs.

Cons: Noisy disc drive, cheap remote

Huge upgrade from watching 4K Blu-rays on an old Xbox One X. Video/audio quality are amazing, and set up was incredibly simple. Bought a scratch and dent unit which is in mostly okay shape, more scratches than I would've thought, but since it's in my entertainment unit it doesn't matter too much. Was a little surprised at the packaging though, Crutchfield clearly tried to reuse the original packaging, but for whatever reason the unit wasn't securely held in the styrofoam inserts, so the unit was flopping around inside it's own manufacturers box when I opened it. Nothing seems to be broken and the unit seems to work fine, but I will need to test it further to make sure nothing was damaged in shipping, so 4 out of 5 stars for that reason alone.

Verified employee review (What's this?)

We have only had this player for a short while but my wife and I have already noticed that the picture quality of older DVD's especially is much better with this player. Sound quality is better as well. Overall, we are very pleased with this purchase. We are especially pleased with how sharp the pictures are for night scenes or landscapes. We are getting older, but our eyes work just fine and this machine makes our older DVD's (we have about 400 DVD/Blu-ray discs) sharper and easier to watch. Well done Panasonic (and especially Crutchfield)!

Pros: -Very fast response times (from insert to play, etc. This is a tremendous pro in my opinion) -Hefty and well made (considering its mostly plastic) -Easy setup -Video and sound quality second to none! -Well worth the money -Plays all DVD's and Blu-ray discs without freezing (our old player froze on approx. one out of every 10 discs.)

Cons: Minor Complaints - The remote is small and slippery. I wish it was easier to hold onto (a bit rubbery) and a little larger. -Also, it would help if it was backlit. -The NetFlix button was smaller and in a different place. It is easy to push it when you don't want to.

Excellent 4K Blu-ray player. Bought it to replace my UB420 which had been having issues with certain discs having horrible pixelization problems. This was able to play the exact same disc with no issues. On top of that, discs load up much more quickly than my old player, so there's no more waiting to start a movie. It uses the same remote as the UB420 - it would have been nice if they included the backlit remote their $1000 player comes with, but since I got this for under $400, it's not really a ding.

Pros: Loads discs quickly Has a front display Seems to be better at playing certain titles than lower end models

Cons: Same basic non backlit remote as lower end models.

Purchased this to replace an almost 6 year old Sony ubp-x800. The difference in image quality is immediately apparent. Ran the first 3 Mummy movies in 4k bluray and they have never looked or sounded better. Keep in mind I'm running this on an earlier Sony xbr55x850d. To get maximum value and performance i would advise to get a newer Tv as well which i will be doing next.Comes with a quick start manual. I advise downloading the full manual to avail yourself of the numerous configuration options. I've heard a few complaints about the remote. I have no real issue with it. People with big fingers might click on the Netflix when trying to hit the arrow up. I love how careful Crutchfield is with packing electronics. When you order from other retailers, they frequently mail electronics only in their original packaging, which means frequent damages and huge vulnerability to package theft. No such issue here. Plus with Crutchfield you have access to genuine informed and educated and friendly tech support. You certainly won't get that with other retail consultants, as they really do not know much if you try and hold a tech conversation with them. Had an other retail store associate 4 years ago rave about how good this Hitachi set was. I knew better. It was a TCL with the Hitachi name on it, but more expensive. More margin for them.Stick with Crutchfield. They will NEVER steer you wrong .

Pros: Image quality Numerous configuration options Wide TV and format compatibility Detailed full manual if you download it which I recommend doing.

Cons: No gamebreakers here. Remote could have been a little more sturdy and beefy. People with large fingers will find it annoying.

This Panasonic is worth the higher price than basic players. I first purchased the LG UBK90 which struggled with errors on some 3 layer 100 gig discs. The Shining was a clear example. This Panasonic plays everything flawlessly, which is the way it should be. If you've invested in a nice home theater, definitely don't skimp on the 4k blu ray player.

Pros: Plays all 4k discs without error. Actually has a front display. Great upconversion of 1080p discs.

Cons: Expensive

I purchased this for my 13 year old son to round out his basic 5.1 system and introduce him to a lifelong enjoyment of movies and music. The same upscaling chip for video as the flagship DP-UB9000 makes this player a great deal for movies especially when it periodically goes on sale. A downside to the player is the folding front panel that hides the tray looks and feels cheap and is likely to break over time. The build and feel of this player just feels low quality. I'm disappointed that the only options for physical media is either cheap or overpriced high end with nothing in a happy middle space. I miss the days when you could buy an exceptional Oppo for a very reasonable price.

Pros: Same video processing as flagship DP-UB9000

Cons: Cheap feel and look even at a lower price point. Folding front panel very cheesy and fragile.

Still have not used with TV. Probably going to work well. I was planning on using with headphones until I get the entertainment center, but can't use the RCA connectors to listen to CDs without being hooked up to TV to control what connections are working. Don't like the full front door you need to open to change disk, Blu-ray or CDs.

A great, heavy duty 4K HDR Blu Ray Player with very few downsides

Ian from WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA on 12/26/2022

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

This is a serious 4K Blu Ray player. It certainly fills the void that Oppo left in terms of image quality. (I highly recommend a calibration disc if you invest in this player and, I'd assume, a first-rate TV or projector to really get the most bang for your buck in terms of image.) Even right out of the box, you'll likely notice its improvement over your previous player-I did and I already had a pretty great 4K player (2019 Sony). Anyone familiar with Panasonic's Blu Ray players knows that there is a granular level of adjustability in terms of picture, sound, etc etc. This is admirable-they really put a lot of power in your hands that most companies seem to automate. It's also a little daunting and can be confusing given that many of these controls are also adjustable on your TV itself. (All the more reason to do some sort of calibration.) Disc loading is quick and once playing discs, you'll be truly impressed, whether with the upscaling or treatment of native 4K HDR discs. This player is a bit expensive but completely worth it.

Pros: Tremendous player with major processing power ; visuals-both upscaled and native 4K-are among the best I've seen at a consumer level ; easy setup and lots of customization

Cons: The remote could be designed better (the Netflix button is in a clumsy place) ; the streaming services (Netflix, Amazon, YouTube) are very limited-Panasonic could really expand these

4K Video is wonderful. Analog audio output outstanding for DTS bluray discs and music dvds. I use the panasonic optical audio output to allow use of my MX135 A/V control center dolby digital output. The A/V center also has an output mode that creates an effect of a Night Club in surround that I use for jazz and blues cds and dvds. Also use with high resolution recordings via the usb input. Very happy with the audio performance.

My previous player was an Oppo BDP-103; however, I sold it a few years ago when we moved into a new home. Ever since I sold it, I regretted my decision... well, until now! The DP-UB820 provides a fantastic 4k image! I don't have the Oppo to compare it to, but the image from this player does not disappoint and puts a smile on my face each and every time I spin up a disk! The menu system is relatively easy to navigate; however, to take full advantage of the image quality that this player can provide, there are various default settings that need to be changed as well as a couple of hidden options. I won't go through them here as there are various YouTube videos that you can follow, but once set, you will see the difference. I'm not a fan of the glossy finish and full length disk tray door, but most players have gone this route, so it's more of a general opinion than a con for this otherwise fantastic player. After spending several weeks with the DP-UB820, I have zero cons with the player itself... the audio / video quality the player provides is simply stellar! When on sale, don't wait... grab it before they are sold out! Highly recommended...

Pros: Fantastic image and sound, relatively easy to navigate menus.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Paired with my Samsung 900a I'd hoped for a better result. I have a 2016 Samsung curved 4k dvd player that was fantastic with the LG Oled but after multiple panel burnouts and a lot of money down the tube I switched to the Samsung 8k. It has a nice picture with cable and streaming but with this DVD player its subpar also. I've adjusted all the settings with little results. My recommendation would be to use this with an Oled if possible, I imagine it would be spectacular. Maybe there's something wrong with this new TV too, I got this on sale, would definitely buy now if you're going too. Also would like to say that the staff here at Crutchfield are excellent, been buying here almost 20 years and wouldn't go anywhere else. If anything new comes up with this problem I will definitely add the results here. Happy hunting!

Pros: Price, sturdy construction

Cons: Subpar picture on this television

Set it up with a Sony 4K TV and an ordinary HDMI cable. Images are beautiful and set up was very easy. Highest quality remote I have held in years. I ordered a high quality and speed HDMI cable - can't imagine how it could improve. Some people complained about how slow the player is to start up. There is a "Quick Start" setting that is off by default. I turned it to on and found that the player starts fast enough for me. It does use more energy in standby/off with this setting, but since I turn off the power strip after each use, not an issue for me. But that also turns off the surge protector, which some may not want to do. We rarely have power surges or failures where I live, so I prefer to take the risk.

Like many people, I bought this (2019) because Oppo players went away. I far as I can tell, the picture is great whether using Blu-Ray or 4K discs. My problem is that is as slow as molasses when you turn it on, open/close the disc drawer, etc. Even previous far less expensive Sony DVD and Blu-Ray players were faster. If I was buying anew, it wouldn't be this one.

Fantastic picture and sound with 4K UHD and blu-ray movies. A little noisy disc operation and looks and feels cheap for it's price. Will not play many older Blu-ray Discs that played perfectly on my Sony X-700M. Panasonic service may as well be nonexistent, nearly impossible to reach a human for assistance and once you do they know almost nothing about products other than what manual contains. They do not make it easy.

Pros: Best picture and sound when it works.

Cons: Poor build quality for the price. Fussy with discs it will play.

Brought this to replace a 5 year Sony USony UBP-X800 ultra HD player which developed some software glitches. I had high hopes for this Panasonic. But, I found I am unable to view any Netflix content. I get the following message- "This content can not be displayed because your TV does not support HDCP 2.2." Now the Sony never had this problem. The Panasonic is connected to an Ultra high definition Denon surround sound system and connected for now to a Samsung 2k plasma (which I love but realize I will eventually have to replace-thus the 4k compatible equipment. Again, though the TV is 2k my other ultra HD player still displayed Netflix in 2K.

Pros: great sound and quality playing disks

Cons: says it streams Netflix, but will not for my setup and with no mention in the product discriptions

The menus are extremely clunky. There is no subtitle button on the remote to toggle them quickly (yes there is a CC button, but NO it does not toggle the subs on and off... I'm not sure what it does, there's a whole separate menu section for closed captions which seems to be entirely different from subs on bluray). The sound and video are sometimes out of sync, and the player provides no way to delay the video. If the video is ahead of the sound, you are screwed. I am most likely going to return it.

Pros: excellent video quality, switches to Dolby Vision mode automatically.

Cons: Terrible interface, audio sync issues

This 4k player was easy to set up and performs well. So far, there have been no freezes or hiccups playing 4k discs. Having the automatic Dolby Vision feature made this an easy choice over the Sony players. The factory settings for audio and video seem to work just fine, although I did have to tweak the audio sync setting a bit. The build quality seems pretty good, although not Oppo quality. Deeply Disappointing: High Tech but lacking basics

Crutchfield customer from TRABUCO CYN, CA on 3/10/2022

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

I am deeply disappointed with this product and you may disagree with my reason. But here it is: it is missing one of the most basic and most used functions. You can't turn Subtitles on/off with one or two clicks on the remote while watching a movie. It requires to use 4 different button with like 8 clicks while watching in the dark. Take a look at the bottom of any Netflix or Prime Video streaming movie and will find Subtitles accessible with one/two clicks. My 10-year old Sony player can do it with on click. Subtitles is one of the most used functions by most users - by far. A total miss - Panasonic! It doesn't matter how high end a player is or how many unimaginably complex functions it offers, if it can't do the most basic and most used things easily then its worthless! This Player's Remote has advanced functions most users won't use in a million years, but no Subtitles. It's Like setting a very lavish wedding and just forgetting the wedding dress! Deeply disappointed with this product and lack of thought! I emailed Panasonic customer support asking about this and it took them 40 days to respond saying no. This is after spending frustrating weeks reading the manual trying to figure it out. Wish Crutchfield said something about it. Now I can't replace with a player that does better than this. 2 stars in my book. If you don't care about basics and care about rarely used mumbo-jumbo features and deep dives into complex menus, then it can be different for yo

Pros: High Tech; plays 4K well. A huge menu of features and functions.

Cons: Missing most basic features like Subtitles on/off. Remote is not back-lit. Menu complex to navigate. Pay for functions you'll never use. Expensive because of complexity not functions of value to user. Tinker with it and you're more likely to screw up the image than improve (complex). Scaling up some HD discs rendered weird images. Product not well thought-out!

Better than Sony

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I read other reviews prior to purchase....good and bad and after 2 weeks use I am ready to share my experience. I have a Sony 4k player and its performance has been hit or miss so I decided it was time for a upgrade. First thing I did out of the box was setup the network settings to update the firmware. The update took some time and I have no idea of the firmware revision history. The owners manual is sparse and this player has much more functionality than the manual tells you how to use. First off...the picture quality is head over heels better than my Sony unit. Many 4k discs I have are Dolby vision and this unit defaults to it over HDR if it is present on the disc. My Sony does not have DV. It also is great playing regular blu ray. My disc of ..The Internship ...looks like its 4k ! Only hitch I have had so far is playing my blu ray of Terminator 2....that disc has the blu ray live feature at the beginning of the disc and of course the studio no longer supports the website its trying to connect to so it kept hanging up trying to connect. After a few tries it finally got past the feature to actually to the main menu to play the movie. I have only played 1 DVD so far.....True Lies...which is a fav of mine and only available on DVD ..so far. I was hoping this player might extract a better picture from the disc as it has never been above a VHS quality picture. I was disappointed that the picture was actually worse when treated to HD scrutiny. So overall 2 thumbs up....so far

Not what it's suppose to be! I wish I could return it, but I waited too long. Some 4K discs break up and pixelate on certain scenes. Now even a few Blu-Rays are doing it! I hesitated buying the Panasonic brand again because of quality issues many years ago. Lots of problems with Panasonic products so I stopped buying them swearing never again! With the glowing reviews on this model I thought I would give Panasonic another try. Mistake! A player for this price and the Panasonic blues once again! ALL of these discs play perfectly on my OPPO! I needed a second 4K for the bedroom. Too bad OPPO isn't doing what they did better than ANYONE else on the planet.

Pros: Sound is very good. Very customizable set-up for various reasons.

Cons: Picture breaks up on various movies.

This is my first 4k bluray player. I was blown away with it. It's hard to describe the quality difference if you have never seen it. Streaming 4k is just not the same. It's a night and day difference. The colors are magnificent. I hope this format continues to stay around for a long time and doesn't lose out to the ease of streaming. If you've never owned a UHD bluray player and are a fan of cinema, do yourself a favor and pick one of these up. You won't be disappointed.

Great UHD 4K Player

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Bought this player after extensive investigation and study. Most of my system is Sony, so first looked at the Sony UHD players, hoping that they would work well with other Sony items. However, the big draw back to the Sony players is you have to manually set HDR each time and this Panasonic switches automagically to the proper HDR (HRD+, HDR10, etc.). It up scales fantastically, overall a great player. I really was tempted by the Panasonic 9000 player, build quality, just screams sturdy. However couldn't bring myself to fork over $1000 for a Bluray player and the parts that matter (what's inside) are almost the same between the 820 and the 9000. Very happy with the purchase

Pros: Auto HDR

I got this player to combine my DVD/BD and CD players in one device. In particular, I wanted something that sounded great with CD audio and this delivers. I'm very happy with the sound quality. It's great for video too but there are lots of other reviews that cover video here so I'll skip that. I have two small complaints with CD playback. First, doesn't display the CD track text and second, it doesn't play the audio when fast forwarding a CD. It mutes the audio which makes it harder to easily stop at the right spot. Both are minor but still annoying. Overall it delivers with excellent sound quality - just wish it had a few more small features.

Pros: Excellent sound with CDs

Cons: No CD track text capability, Mutes audio when fast forwarding a CD (hard to stop at the right spot)

This Panasonic DP-UB820 replaces my Oppo BD-103, since I just picked up a LG OLEDCX 55" television and wanted to play UHD discs. Without a doubt, the Oppo was a higher quality unit in terms of construction. The Panasonic is thinner, lighter and just feels cheap. I do like the front panel display, but a detachable power cord would have made it easier to install/remove from my audio cabinet. Fortunately the picture looks great. I'm still in the process of calibrating my TV, but my UHD HDR discs look awesomely clear and colorful with just basic settings. I do wish there was a way to see whether a UHD disc contained HDR10 or Dolby Vision metadata. The status menu shows me lots of info, but not the technology I'm watching. The "settings" menu could also use some work. The setting for specifying the TV is a OLED model was hard to find. The Pandora app background display is light gray and too bright. A dark mode or background color selection would be nice.

Pros: Great picture Front panel display 4K YouTube app

Cons: Fixed power cord Rear USB port Lacking settings

Have had this player a couple of weeks now and could not be happier with my purchase. Massive upgrade over my old Sony 700. 4K playback is breath taking on this thing, both video and audio. NO annoying skips, freezes or audio dropouts. That really plagued my former player. As impressive as the 4K output is, I'm possibly even more impressed with the upscaling capabilities of this player. 1080p playback has left my jaw on the floor at times while watching discs I've viewed several times previously (Gladiator for example). If you are in the market do NOT hesitate to own this player. Thanks to Gage in Tech support for helping out with a couple of setup questions. Crutchfield is the best.

Pros: Great video and audio playback from ALL sources.

Cons: Remote is cumbersome.

I have mixed feelings on the Panasonic DP-UB820. Let me begin by saying when the player is working well the picture quality is fabulous. After I received the player I only played brand new out of the box 4K movies for the first 3 weeks. I played about 20 movies and 3 of them froze on me. This tells me the problem is with the Panasonic and not the disc itself. This is a major problem. After 3 weeks I started playing Blu-Ray discs from Netflix and the upscaling quality was very good. The remote is marginal at best, but it does the job. All in all I would say this is a high quality item that will most likely give you a fair amount of disc freezing.

Pros: Very nice picture quality.

Cons: Has disc freezing problems.

Best value in 4K players, buy for video and surround sound quality

Crutchfield customer from Springfield, IL on 4/8/2021

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

This is a fantastic 4k player. I settled on this mostly because it has the same picture quality as the high-end model but at less than half the cost. For playing 4k discs it has the same sound quality as the high end model as well. The main difference between this and the top of the line is that this model is missing some output connections, primarily for analog listening. I personally didn't need those, but if you do the step up is for you. The case is also plastic rather than aluminum, so it doesn't look as high end. Again, though, on sale it's less than half the cost. Regardless, it has an HDR optimizer which works absolutely amazingly. I also like that it does it automatically and well--you don't have to keep adjusting settings with each disc. It also has all current available forms/versions of HDR, which not all do. Outside of one single random shut down it has worked flawlessly, the remote is pretty good, the display is relatively small but easy to read. The main draw, again, is the picture quality and it delivers. The audio output for 4k discs is also excellent. If you are using a sound bar or TV speakers this won't matter, but if you have a surround sound system this is a big draw. I cannot emphasize this enough--the video and audio are both noticeably superior to the same content when streamed. I would highly recommend this player.

Good When it Works - But it Does not Always Work

I purchased this 4K DVD player based on Crutchfield's online video review. I had previously purchased the Panasonic UB-9000 for my Home Theater system but wanted a 4K player for another TV without investing $1,000. This player works great until it doesn't. I have tried 4K Blu-ray DVDs as well as regular Blu-ray DVDs and the player will occasionally stop transmitting picture and sound. It acts like the player has run out of buffer and cannot process data until the buffer clears. I don't know if that can happen with a DVD player but that is how it acts. It is very frustrating. I haven't noticed this being a problem on the UB-9000 but I will make sure to pay special attention the next time I spin up a 4K DVD in that player.

Pros: Great Picture

Cons: Goes Blank During Playback

Pretty disappointed

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Have had the player for several months now. Overall, pretty disappointed. The USB connection cannot recognize any type of file, whether picture, audio or video. It sees the drive, but says the drive is empty. Doesn't matter what type of drive or how it's formatted, doesn't matter what type of file. This is the second unit I got from Crutchfield, I returned the first one thinking it was defective. When the player is working, the picture and sound quality are outstanding. However, it has problems with about 50% of the 4k discs I watch. The picture goes to black for about 2-10 seconds multiple times. Watching 'V For Vendetta' the other night, this happened at least a dozen times. Very frustrating. One good trick I learned is that the player is extremely sensitive to fingerprints on the silver side of the disc. If you don't keep the disc completely polished, with the smallest fingerprint the player will skip sections or reject the disc as unreadable. Not sure if this is applicable to this particular player or all 4k players.

Pros: When it works, the picture and sound are outstanding.

Cons: USB connections don't work and the picture drops out to black fairly regularly.

Now that I've had more than ample time. I can give an opinion about said product. For the money spent, it's a superlative piece of equipment. Yes, I too wish it had more metal, like it's higher ranking sibling. But, for me if my choice is aesthetics, or performance, I'll choose performance every time! Simply put, if your a video fan with a great tv or projector. Don't hesitate to pick this thing up! I luckier than most. I'm able to pair this with the Panny JZ2000 OLED. A big thank you to my brother!

Pros: Sleek look. Strong performance.

Cons: None really.

I was tempted to rate it 4 stars because an important thing to me did not work. I have 5.1 channel input on my receiver, so I was looking forward to using six of the player's 7.1 channel output. But the channel for a sub-woofer does not work. Even the test program just skips the sub-woofer, but doesn't skip the last two channels of the 7.1 player. Nevertheless, my audio results would be better using 2 channels and letting the receiver create the 5.1 sound. Otherwise, the player is excellent and I'm very pleased with its quality.

Having to replace a Blu-ray player had me on the search for a high quality replacement . I own an Oppo, and love it, it is very well built and an excellent performer all around, especially audio. But I was not looking for anything for CD playback, strictly DVDs for this application. I considered the Panasonic DP-UB9000 as this was closest to the Oppo, but really did not need to spend that much only for movies, as I already had a nice CD player in this system. I decided on the DP-UB820 model. This player was a simple hook up, power and HDMI into the TV. Within a few minutes I was onscreen, and doing a firmware update, which took about 5 minutes. Popped in a DVD regular, and a Blu-ray to check , and yes the picture was extremely good from the start. Sound seemed fine running through the TV optical output to my preamp. Again, i did not hook up the RCA out puts and check the sound there, i did not have that need. I did play a CD and it sounded fine, and some differences are so minor, it was not apparent if there were many for this short test. I liked the remote, and the user interface. The web capabilities are a bit sluggish compared to the FireTv , but are nice if this is all you have. Build quality is definitely budget, and the two top mounted buttons are unsatisfying to use. Maybe I just have to get used to them. The front panel that flips down seems unnecessary , I just keep it down for ease of use. Movie performance is great and I recommend this unit .

Pros: easy to setup, solid visual performance, fine audio, web extras, nice remote

Cons: cheaper plastic feel overall, front panel drop down

Great picture and features, but finicky reading disks

I picked this because it seemed like the best, most dependable model available at a reasonable price. It had problems reading the first disk I tested (The Last Jedi). Same scene locks up and skips every time no matter what setting I use. Since it happens in the same place no matter what settings I use, i assume it is because the disk is marred in some way, but my Sony X800-M2 reads it no problem. Hopefully this is a one off issue and it doesn't have trouble with other disks.

Pros: Great features, like Dolby Vision

Cons: Had trouble reading the first 4K disk I tried

I bought this to replace a Sony X800 (Non Dolby Vision). The upgrade in HDR is noticeable with the HDR settings to match the display type. With my new LG 77" OLED HDR looked great with the Sony X800, but the same disc on the DP-U820 took it up a level with better contrast thanks to the HDR Settings. Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos sound better. I didn't think that would be possible as the bit stream is going to the same processor, but there is a minor, but noticeable difference in sound quality. The sound feels more full and clean. In particular several key scenes in the Fifth Element sound more natural.

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I'm sure I'm in the minority, in that ~80% of disks I insert in my Blu-ray player are music CDs; occasionally i'll actually watch a DVD or BD. So the player's CD functionality is very important to me, to include displaying track information, specifically, the song title, the artist name, and the album title. This DP-UB820 displays NONE of that information. And the screen saver is weak too; it should display the song info, duh! But apparently, this very expensive unit can't read the CD information. That's lame.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT BUY THIS DISK PLAYER

Christopher from CYPRESS, TX on 1/8/2021

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT BUY THIS DISK PLAYER. First, I'll give credit where it's due: the picture and sound quality of this disk player are excellent. However, it doesn't play SACD or DVD-audio disks, which sucks. What really drives me crazy, however, is that it turns itself off automatically after it has sit idle for 15 minutes or so, and then, unlike just about any other disk player that I've ever owned, it won't resume the movie where I left off; you have to go to the main menu, select the closest scene, and fast forward/rewind to where you were. I simply cannot overstate how much I hate that. Even if you stop the disk or turn off the player intentionally you can't simply resume BluRay disks. And I've searched the settings nearly a dozen times and I can't find how to turn off the auto-shutdown. Jesus did I ever love my Oppo BDP-95 3D BluRay player and wish that I had bought an Oppo UDP-203 4K disk player before Oppo left the market (why the devil did they do that?).

Pros: Good picture and sound quality.

Cons: The player shuts itself off automatically after sitting idle a short while and won't automatically resume BluRay disks - you have to go to the main menu, select the nearest scene, and fast forward/rewind to where you were. After searching the settings nearly a dozen times I can't find a way to change this. What the devil was Panasonic thinking?

Makes My Wholes System Better

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

(system: NAD T758 AVR, Paradigm Studio Monitor Reference Speakers for all but the rear surround, Mitsubishi 72" DLP TV) The improvement of both audio and video over the two year old $100 Samsung this DP-UB820 replaced is complete and comprehensive. The definition, clarity, soundstage and image of the sound for both movie soundtracks and CD's easily earns it's way into the level of audiophile quality. The improvement to video quality of the Blue Ray disc into my old non-4K DLP MItsubishi rear projector TV is visually mesmerizing. I put in the Last Jedi just to quickly see the difference and ended up watching the entire episode because I was amazed by the quality of the whole experience. I think my favorite feature of this BR player is the separate HDMI outputs for sound and video. Now I don't have to spend the $500 to upgrade my 4 year old NAD to 4K switching because I can run the HDMI directly to the TV (when the new TV arrives). And although I can't prove it empirically, the audio from the dedicated HDMI into the AVR seems to be a step above what the digital optical cable provides. (if nothing else I now have a peace of mind while watching and listening that the alternative input might be better.) Finally, the UB820 just made everything else in my system better. And the next system upgrade won't be from a sense that something is missing- but from wondering and seeing just how good it could get.

Pros: > sound stage, image and clarity >video quality is out of this world >separate HDMI outputs for audio and Video add great flexibility for setup > build quality

Cons: > remote (but what remote control is every a plus :-) )

I needed a second machine for upstairs computer office. Well if you are just going to play BD and 4K discs its fine. But it won't play M2ts files audio through the rear USB input. It will play the video but that's it. Even when I split the audio output from the video, no go. I put a lot of back up movies on a hard drive so I wouldn't have to sift through Discs. Won't work. A lot of money for limited capability. My OPPO 203 plays them all. I can play the files through my PC and my OLED TV will upscale them. Considering returning the 820. Save your money and get something else for half the price.

Pros: clarity and upscaling

A $500 Value DVD Player?

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

Panasonic is a very underrated company. Most people would place it a notch below Sony or LG, but when you step back and look at the products, you see a different story. Panasonic was one of the last holdouts for plasma TVs. They were incredible. I had 2 of them in very bright daylight rooms and they were more than able to keep up with the ambient light. In our kitchen/family room, their superior off-axis performance made them usable where an LCD would have been useless. They made the best cordless phones. And any DJ will tell you the Technics SL-1200 pretty much owns the disco vinyl scene. High end audiophiles fall silent at the mention of the Technics SP10. First available 50 years ago, in its latest version the SP-10 R for $11,000 you get a vinyl spinner. No base, no dustcover, no arm, and no cartridge. Just a record spinner that is considered one of the finest in the world. What does that have to do with their DVD players? Bona Fides. These folks have tech chops. Serious tech chops. And while the DP-UB820 isn't their flagship (the $999 DP UB9000 is), it is the value offering, the least expensive player today that plays - automatically in most cases - the latest 4k DVD with Atmos, Dolby Vision HDR 10+ and any other acronyms for video, this player plays them all for $500. While streaming is likely the future, 4K HDR 10+ or Dolby Vision DVDs are the state-of-the- art today. Will this be the last DVD player I buy - or need? There is a good likelihood of

Pros: Plays every known combination of resolutions and audio encoding, and plays them well.

Cons: It costs $500.

I've had the Panny for 2 weeks. I am consider myself a video and audio enthusiast. I've tried out all the current 4k players on the market and took back everyone for one reason or another. THIS one is for keeps! I am not a music consular, so I didn't purchase it to have those features available to me. As far as video and audio quality it is in my opinion the best midrange player on the marked today. It supports alll the major video codec(Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+). It also has a killer feature that seperates it from all the rest(tone mapping). Meaning that if your tvs brightness is not able to get the picture as bright as you like it has an HDR optimizer that allows you to make the necessary adjustments to your liking. The Oppo 203 was a great device but the HCX chrome processor delivers much better picture and that is saying something. So, if you happen to have 423 dollars laying around and burning a whole in your pocket(or purse), the go ahead and take the leap. It will be well rewarded.

Pros: Picture Quality, HDR optimizer, Dolby Vision,HDR10, HDR10+, Tone Mapping, Counter on front display, USB support on front and back.

Cons: Build Quality, Remote

The HDR and color on my LG OLED65C9 is better than my Oppo UDP-203 once Display type set for OLED. More details in dark (and bright) scenes on 4K UHD "The Rise of Skywalker". I was loving it until... I think it was Scene 23 (Revelation) that almost had me send the unit back. Bottom of screen showed pixelated bar (~1/10 of screen height) of white, red, blue pixels and started "stuttering" on frames. Ran to my Oppo, where same chapter played without issue. Purchased new "8K" HDMI cable and noticed a slight haze on the disk (did I the ol ' wipe on shirt trick) and between the combo, the Pany played w/o further issue. So far so good... I would have to say the Pany DP-UB820 is more sensitive to disk condition which might be aided by a firmware update - a lot of complaints online about lack of current firmware release in the US (over a year old). Have not tried 4K HDR movie 1917 yet, which is reported to have issues for several owners on various forums.

Pros: Depending upon Disk & Display combo, better HDR details than Oppo UDP-203. Price - yes really. I'm not going to spend more than $500 to keep a disk player on current gen best disk features and this was on sale.

Cons: Disk condition sensitive (?) - less "margin" than other players in my testing.

I've been watching this 4k/UHDplayer for a while, didn't really make sense replacing the two other models I have but the Black Friday special made me bite and bring one of these home. Previously, I had the Samsung UBD-K8500, which was a solid entry level player. We wanted something better so we got the Sony UBP-X800. Unfortunately, running the Sony in our Denon S720 receiver and Samsung 65" KS9800 ran into several problems and glitches. Here was the time to sample the Panasonic, I'm glad I did. The picture is phenominal, the remote isn't great but it works, we dont' plan to use the integrated apps so that won't be an issue either. The sound was great we have 7.1, no Atmos yet but watching Rise of Skywalker in 4k and GOT in 4k was awesome. I've only had this for less than a month will have to see how this player holds up over time as for now we are very satisfied.

Pros: Great picture and Sound

Cons: Little wide for my cabinet Remote is wide would like it slimmer

Home Theater MUST

If you are a movie lover like me this is a MUST! You can't compare the level of control you have on the picture modes vs. a gaming console for Ultra HD Blu-rays. I have a dedicated theater room and I love that you can bypass the AV Receiver for image and feed the projector directly. I have definitely noticed the image quality improve.

Pros: HDR Image control Quick Ultra HD Blu-ray reproduction Separate Video and Audio HDMI's

Cons: Is an expensive player (almost the price of a new PS5) Limited casting options (YouTube)

I haven't had a chance to use the equipment much yet, but have played a 4k UHD bluray, standard HD bluray, and a DVD on it. Video quality on each was excellent, as expected, with nice upscaling of each level. I run the audio via HDMI bitstream to my AVR for sound processing. The unit supports all sound modes well. Only drawback (hence only 4 stars), and I knew this when I bought it, is the unit won't play my Audio DVD's like the Oppo it replaced. The unit is very easy to setup, and so far I've had no issues with playback or configuration. Overall, a nice unit for the money.

Initially purchased due to glowing reviews of blu-ray and 4k video quality, and also importantly, upscaling of DVD. In all of these aspects, the reviews are accurate! Could not be more happy with it. It's AMAZING. I have an older TV, need to upgrade. There is a delay in the audio coming back from the TV via optical cable to my stereo. I wish this player had more options for adjusting the audio timing. I hope perhaps an updated TV may help lip sync, but I am not sure. After 363 days of use, this player started to jam discs when ejecting. It doesn't happen all the time. I have to manually pull the half-open tray and the disc, which is sitting up out of the tray, by hand, manually. Fortunately, the upper and lower surfaces which the disc gets jammed against are smooth enough that this did not result in any damage to the discs. I purchased the Sony UBP-X800M2 from Crutchfield as a backup/replacement due to the disc jamming issue. That way I will be able to take the time needed to fix the Panasonic with zero downtime. I won't make the mistake again of buying from a retailer that doesn't offer support later! Buy from Crutchfield for that lifetime support, it's worth it. Support after the purchase is something you will really value when things don't go right. If buying this again: I'd go for the DP-UB9000, perhaps it's better quality, especially if the disc drive itself is different? Not sure.

Pros: Amazing picture and sound

Cons: Quality issue after 1 year with disc tray jamming discs when ejecting. Wish there were more audio lag adjustment settings, but not sure if it's just my older TV.

I only use this player for discs only. I can not comment on the streaming apps, as I use my LG OLED TV for all my streaming services. I am a fan of physical media over streaming, though. And this player justifies that even more. This is hands down the best Blu-Ray player I have ever owned. I have played standard Blu-Ray and 4K UHD Blu-Ray discs, and it's simply fantastic. The up scaling on 1080p content is supburb, and the Dolby Vision 4K content looks stunning on my LG OLED! I switched to this player from an Xbox One X unit, and there is a difference between the Xbox and a dedicated player like this one. I picked this up on a black Friday deal, so it was well worth it to me. I have purchased TV shows on disc that we have access to on Netflix, and the quality difference is night and day. The discs with the up scaling on this player is so good, even the Mrs. noticed the difference and she is not tech savvy at all. I have several hours of use with this unit, and I have never had any freezing issues, skips, or stutters. I can not recommend this player enough!

Pros: Amazing playback quality for 4K UHD discs and 1080p up scaling is sharp!

Cons: Nothing that I can think of. Works great as a disc spinner.

Good picture and sound quality. Decently fast. There is one terrible feature about this player; It turns off automatically after 20 minutes on pause, and does not let you resume when you turn it back on. This is a total deal breaker for me. Sometimes I need to take a break, and 20 minutes is an unacceptable short amount of time to sit on pause before turning off. I have never seen this type of thing on any blu-ray player I've ever owned. Panasonic has really screwed up with this one.

Pros: Good performance.

Cons: Remote could be better. Almost unusable due to undefeatable auto-power off feature.

I bought this to replace my Sony UBP X700 which was starting to drop both audio and video for random brief periods of time. I was just hoping for something more reliable, but was very pleased by significant difference in performance. The Panasonic's video is crisper / clearer, but even more impressive was the audio playback, which was significantly better than the Sony. I had become accustomed to having to use subtitles to be able to understand the speech in the movies we were playing. Without any other adjustments, I find speech much clearer / understandable and no longer need subtitles. Music, too, is significantly better with this unit - sharper / clearer, especially mid-range and upper frequencies. Based on my experience with these 2 players, the Panasonic is clearly better in my opinion.

I primarily bought this because of its great reviews for upscaling non-4k material. It seems to do a great job. The 4K movies that I've watched on it have also been great. As others have said not really much point buying this if you are really wanting it for the apps. Better to get a Roku or Chromecast or something like that for those kind of things. As long as you understand that upfront especially if you can get it on sale then I recommend it.

I have a Panasonic DP-UB9000 as my primary Blu-Ray player. However I have multiple projectors in my media room so I was always needing to root around the back of my cabinet to move HDMI cables around. For the price of a high quality switch, I was able to buy the DP-UB820 and permanently connect it directly to one of my projectors and the DP-UB9000 to the other. As each have an audio only HDMI output I can connect them both to my receiver. I really like both players and at the current pricepoint for the DP-UB820, unless you are into analog audio and need the best D/A converters, these is no video reason to spend the extra money on the DP-UB9000. Picture quality appears to be identical. Similar menu formast with most of the adjustments you can make on the flagship model can be made on the lower priced one. The DP-UB820 remote is a little clunky and not as refined as the flagship remote but it is usable. Both remotes appear to have the same control codes however each player can be set so there is no interference between the two. In fact if you pick up the wrong remote, the other player will notify you of which control code it is set to when you push a button. Crutchfield's pricing was inline or lower than most box stores and online sellers. I have dealt with them before and as in the past, the service and shipping time was top notch.

Pros: In my opinion it has the best picture quality you can get from any current Blu-Ray player. Sorry but OPPO is gone. Excellent HDR support and adjustment capabilities.

Cons: Clunky remote that is not easy to hold or illuminated. For Sony lovers, no SACD playback. This should be on any high end player that gives you individual analog outputs but I assume Panasonic didn't feel the need to pay to license it from Sony.

Works well and the picture quality is superb. For playing regular and 4K Blu-rays this is a top notch player without having to pay top dollar. There are many reviewers comparing it to OPPO costing thousands. But I bought it for it's DVD sound features. It has what I needed to play DSD 64, DSD128 and PCM 192khz 24 bit DVDs. The DVD DSD audio reproduction would please all but the hardened audiophiles. This player is everything I needed to listen to my converted vinyl. The Panasonic UB-820-k ( K is the latest model of the UB-820) is simply top notch without paying a thousand dollars for it's big brother which has a place in a very upscale home theater. It does everything well and there is a ton of information on the web and YouTube if you need help setting it up. Dolby Vision and HDR10 work perfectly. I have not been able to test HDR10+ yet though. It is easy to hookup via HDMI to your AVR or AV processor as well as your TV if you need to run it that way. The audio for Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital plus etc sound clear and precise. I have nothing to say bad about it. I don't use the built in apps such as Netflix etc so I can't speak for those. Make sure your HDMI cable is high performance with ethernet. 18GB/s minimum. If it carries the certification stamp on the box even better.

Pros: Supports all HDR formats Easy to setup Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HDR10+ support and playback. Audio is perfect

I bought this to replace my Oppo that doesn't have 4K capabilities. The unit starts up more quickly than the Oppo. The upscaling on regular DVDs is very good and is visually better than the Oppo. Build is quite good but not as good as the Oppo. If you want 4K, this is a great unit to own.

Pros: Upscaling on normal DVDs

Cons: Build is good but not as good as the Oppo

I'll give it FIVE stars simply for it's build and performance so far, although I have found a couple of older DVD's that won't play , but still play fine on my older Samsung DVD Plaver as well as in my computers, both new Dell XPS's laptop and Desktop. It paired up nicely to my Denon DRA 800H receiver and Samsung Q80 TV, picture and audio quality is superb.

Pros: Excellent Performance

Cons: Only one listed above otherwise no "cons" to report

Compared to an OPPO 103, here is what the Panasonic DP-UB820 sounds like: Pros: Picture is awesome. Dialogue seems more "real". Handles newer sound formats well (which the OPPO cannot). Two HDMI outs to separate sound from picture. Can be used with only one HDMI out. Good flexibility for setup (although a bit tedious). Cons: Both the highs and the lows are not open or airy, especially on special effects and demonstration disks. Bass is boomy and not tightly controlled. Highs are shallow. Remote is disappointing and not backlite.

Upgraded to this player from an Oppo UDP-203. I say upgraded because, while Oppo still provides support, they got out of the physical media Blu Ray game. So far this player has performed in every way I had hoped. Accessing the player menu while the disc tray is empty makes it easy to configure. Accessing the menu while a disc is in the player is a touch cryptic, but it's possible. My only complaint is the remote looks and feels like the same remote you would expect to be included with an $80 player. I suspect this is done to save costs, and if you're a real cinephile, I suppose they expect you would upgrade to a high end 3rd party remote

The Gold Standard of 4K players!

Exceptional product. The picture and sound quality is a noticeable upgrade the moment you start to watch a blu-ray or 4K movie. Easy to set up, plenty of options for fine tuning the picture settings to your liking. The HDR optimizer alone is real star feature. It really brings out extra detail and gives it that little extra something that less expensive players just don't have. This is the product to have if you're into 4K and blu-ray movies!

Pros: HDR optimizer is a game changer. Excellent picture & sound quality. Numerous setting options to fine tune the picture & sound

Cons: All plastic build gives it a less than premium feel and it could greatly benefit from a metal chassis. The entire front flap drops down when loading/unloading a disc which seems like an unnecessary design function.

Great audio and video. Runs quiet. Very low lag opening and closing drawer. Really like the digital display for elapsed time. Power on/off is quick also. Now for the wish list: 1. Wish there were a single button to switch between elapsed time and time remaining showing on the digital display. Can get time remaining but a two step process using the STATUS button. 2. Wish there were a single button to cycle through subtitles. Again a two step process using the AUDIO button. 3. Wish the remote was back lit. All in all an excellent player!

Pros: Excellent audio and video. Runs quiet. Drawer opens/closes promptly. Quick power on/off. Love digital display showing elapsed time.

Cons: Time remaining cannot be shown on digital display. Two step process to change subtitles. Remote not backlit.

Cons: Remote is not backlit, no app for remote, cheap plastic look, compared to the UB 9000, no streaming music services (Tidal).

I was very impressed with everything about this player. The picture is excellent and it plays many different formats od CDs. Then I started streaming. Amazon was great and all was good until I started watching Netflix. Everything was going fine and then the screen would blink black on and off about 5 times, then it was good for a minute and then the blinking repeated. Then it was good for 15 minutes and the cycle repeated. It is very irritating. I googled the problem and found out it is a common issue with some DVD players and there is no fix even being looked at. I had a Sony Bluray and never had any problems. So for everything else, it is great but if you watch a lot of Netflix you may want to stay with Sony.

So far, so good. Only had this unit a couple weeks but it does what it's supposed to do. Setup was easy. Shipment was fast. Appears to be a good player. The only "negative" for me is that the only way to open the tray is with the remote - no button on the front of the machine. My 12 year old Sony player finally reached that point where it inconsistently refused to play some discs. Hopefully this player will prove to be dependable - time will tell.

This is my first foray into 4k and I purchased a new Sony A8H OLED to accompany this player. I didn't want to cheap out and buy the cheapest 4k player I could find. I started out by looking at a comparable Sony model that cost $100 more but after watching hours of reviews on Youtube and reading countless articles I could not find another 4k player that outshined this particular model (outside of Panasonic's flagship 9000 model - which was over twice as much). The pluses here are that this particular device has the same little engine driving this one as it does their top-end model so the picture quality is top notch. It outclassed the Sony player I was considering in terms of both picture quality and ease of use - the Sony model (forgive me I can't remember the exact model offhand but it was $500) required you to manually adjust to select Dolby Vision, HDR settings, etc. each time you'd put a new disc in. The pass-through eARC function works well as well with no issues being plugged into my LG soundbar. I've never seen movies look this amazing. Discs also load MUCH faster than either of my old BluRay players. I appreciate the streamlined smooth front to the player as it creates a seamless appearance. Fantastic little device. I would recommend this to everyone looking to upgrade their home theater experience.

Pros: Same processor as their flagship 9000 model, good price, outstanding picture

Cons: If planning to use this for Netflix, Prime video, etc. the selection screen to get to those apps moves very slowly. I'd recommend only buying this for actual 4k discs.

I previously had the Sony UBPX700. A great little unit for sure, that many excellent reviews can't be wrong :). However being the audio/ht - phile that I am I couldn't help but wonder if upgrading to this Panasonic unit would be worth double the cost of the Sony. Then I noticed this unit was on sale and just couldn't resist and pulled the trigger. I'm like that ??! Plus I had read that now that the Oppo units are no longer available the Panasonic units were the next best thing. Well they truly are. I honestly hadn't expected to see a big difference in picture quality. I was shocked at the immediate "punch" in picture depth, quality, and image that the Panny delivered. I have spent quite a bit of time and money (MUCH more money than time??) on my HT system and this unit was the perfect upgrade worthy of my system! If you're on the fence about this unit just do it. It's worth it!

Pros: Exceptional picture depth and quality!

Cons: A little pricey but you do get what you pay for

The Best HDR Player You Will Find At This Price

Christopher from BEAVERCREEK, OH on 6/24/2020

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

While you do pay a premium for this player, it's ultimately worth it. Every other player I have bought or looked at with Dolby Vision below this price point winds up being unreliable and suffers from regular playback issues like freezing and skipping. After watching a variety of disks on this player I can say I have had zero issues with it. To add to that, for the extra you pay compared to other players, you get analog audio, which I know several will appreciate. The big extra I enjoy though is the HDR optimizer. While it may sound like a gimmick feature at first, I was genuinely impressed with how well it brought out extra detail in HDR 10 content while still keeping the HDR impact intact. And if you don't like the default settings there's plenty of customization too. Its settings for bright viewing environments also work better than the default bright HDR settings on my TV. I highly recommend this player if you want to enjoy HDR Blu-Rays.

Pros: - Flawless playback - Dolby Vision and HDR 10+ support - HDR Optimizer is a game changer for HDR 10

Cons: - A bit pricey - Streaming apps are lacking compared to a dedicated device - Plastic Build

Good player. Critically missing remote button. Flip panel dumb.

Ryan from East Wenatchee on 6/22/2020

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

So far no issues with the player itself. But, there is NO button on the remote to access a DVD's main menu screen. Something every other player has! To get to the menu, you have to go to the blu-ray player's configuration options menu, then scroll down to "menu". So 8 or so remote clicks for what should only take one. The pop-up menu and top menu buttons on the remote don't do it. If there was a direct remote code that I could enter on a smart remote, that would be fine, but there isn't (that I can find). Ridiculous. I like the readout on the front. Do not like the full width flip-down front panel. In a tight space, can interfere with smart remote IR extenders, and make direct attachment of IR emitters impractical. I don't understand why it's there.

Pros: Good output quality.

Cons: Missing remote "menu" button. Flip down front panel is pointless and troublesome.

The picture quality is just great on this device. The ability to tune to the type of television is a big part of the sophistication in the unit. This is a great 4k and HD Blu-ray player. More on DVDs to come. The picture and sound are excellent. It's a sturdy, quiet player. Suggest purchasing a smart 4k TV first. Otherwise, the HDCP 2.2 (4k copy protection) will give you headaches. There are not many apps. Prime, YouTube and Netflix are there but little else. If you already have a 4k smart TV you are okay. Stream from the TV. Also, some older DVDs and TV shows on DVD do not automatically stretch to fit the screen like they do on other players. If you can adjust picture size with your TV to remove black bars on the sides you are good to go. Also, Panasonic places it's remote buttons in locations that are different from Sony and Samsung remotes. Takes a little getting used to. I keep my HD Blu-ray player connected to play DVD's. Of course, you forget all of this when you watch a brilliant 4K movie with the latest in HDR and 7.1 sound. Steve Kindig's video and review are what sold me. In fact, he is the main reason I am a Crutchfield customer!

Pros: Great for 4k and HD Blu ray discs

Cons: Short on apps, TV shows do not fill the screen.

Love the player although it took sometime configuring the settings correctly. Not correctly really, out the box and it will play fine, but there is a tremendous amount of tweaking one can do to set this up as you chose.

Pros: Super quiet

Cons: My only complaint is with the on-screen display. When loading a disc you get this box with the top bar appears to be highlighted as in the example above. It always creates doubt for me if the two bars below it aren't highlighted also, does that mean it isn't in 4k. Just a minor complaint but each time it starts me to thinking if it is set up correctly.

I wasn't sure about spending this much on a UHD Blu-Ray Player, but after reading enough different reviews, I started to realize that the high end Sony models could not render the colors the way the Panasonic Models do and I'm pretty sure that's accurate after experiencing it for myself. I like the overall look of this unit and I especially like the feel of the contour of the remote in my hand, although I wish the menu return button was in the lower left like most remotes. The menus offer a lot of customization of the video and sound and especially the HDR features which is what these Panasonic UHD Blu-Ray Players are known well know for if you read the reviews. I'm running the video directly to my 2019 75" Samsung Q70 QLED 4K TV to not loose any of the Video Codecs which are more on par with my newer TV and less so with my older 4K Receiver. I'm using the ARC HDMI on the TV to return the Audio to my Yamaha Adventage 7.1 Dolby Atmos Receiver. I'm using 8k grade HDMI cables throughout to give the system as much available bandwidth as possible. I'm have 7.2 with Klipsch Reference Tower Speakers and my surround channels are elevated and focused down towards the viewer. I'm most impressed with my first UHD Blu-Ray player experience, "Mad Max Furry Road UHD," and I'm really glad I bought the Panasonic model. If you dump $7,000 into a Entertainment System, you don't want to the full experience by not being willing to spend a little more on a UHD Blu-Ray Player--Trust Me!

I kept putting off buying this player. I currently have a Sony UPB-X820 which played 4K disks with great clarity. I purchased a Sony Bravia TV and the player in December of 2017. Both units were supposed to receive a Dolby Vision firmware upgrade. The TV was capable of the upgrade but the X800 player was not. After reading that the upgrade couldn't happen because of the internal chip I made the decision to buy the DP-UB820 with Dolby Vision. The UB820 plays disk videos with awesome clean and clear picture. It up-scales DVDs and regular Blu-ray disks impressively. Whether the movie is using HDR or Dolby Vision the picture really jumps off the screen. I also like the feature of being able to add a 4K 3840x2160 picture of your choice as the player background. JPG file works, PNG files don't and I didn't try Bitmap files. I've owned this unit for 2-1/2 weeks and I'm both impressed and very satisfied. One thing that is disappointing is this unit WILL NOT PLAY lossless audio from an external HDD storage. The video plays fine but without audio. Files like MKV files ripped with lossless audio won't play. They do play through my Plex app on my Roku device. Don't let this oversight by Panasonic stop you from buying this player. Thank you to Crutchfield for passing on the discounted refund to me two weeks after my purchase. That was a bonus.

Pros: Awesome picture Dolby Vision and HDR Up-scales DVDs & Blu-rays Awesome sound transfer as well.

Cons: Doesn't play lossless audio for an external HDD storage. MKV files with lossless audio will play WITHOUT sound.

I upgraded from an older Sony player from 2012, so I was expecting the 820 to be better, and it is. I think the only thing I changed was to set sharpness to +1. Oh, and display type to High Luminance LCD to match my Vizio PX-75. I've watched a few 4k HDR movies, and the picture is amazing. The BBC's Planet Earth II is stunning.

Satisfied but not Overwhelmed

My Oppo 103 player was a reference standard for A/V quality and I purchased the UB820 to take advantage of the display capability of my new 4K TV. There is a subtle (not remarkable) improvement in picture and sound quality playing blu-ray discs, just as I found a subtle (not remarkable) improvement in picture quality upgrading from my 2K to 4K TV. Hoped to take advantage of the upgraded video processing to stream, but pic and sound are no better than via my 4K Fire Stick. The non-backlit remote and clunky/slow internet interface both disappoint. 4K quality via streaming leaves me wanting: it does not approach what one gets from a disc, where the real magic of 4K lies. I prefer films on disc, and other than investing in more than a handful of UHD discs for my library (not likely), the market for UHD rentals is not good. Netflix does not offer them, nor will they. Dilemma: as 4K disc sources are limited, do I need to spend this much to only somewhat enhance my viewing experience? I was going to return the player but as it just went on sale, the savings realized through serendipitous timing make my purchase more palatable. Game changer? No. Enhancements to my previous setup? Definitely, but at a price, with a compromise on convenience (that remote).

Pros: Enhanced picture and sound

Cons: Non-backlit, clumsy remote

This is without a doubt the best 4K player available today! It loads faster than anything else I've used and the picture quality is outstanding. Many reviews are critical of the supplied remote and I agree. It's cluttered and cheap. There are a few streaming media apps but if you have a television worthy of this player, it already has the same apps and they probably perform better there.

After careful review of many articles from crutchfield and many other forums I decided to spend the extra 200 or so and step up to the UB820. Without question, or doubt it was the right decision. This is a phenomenal player. The fact that it handles all of the competing HDR formats, is one thing, if you decide to get this unit, the picture if produces will blow you away. From your favorite movie to your 20 year old DVD of Elmos world upscaled to 4k which your daughter squeals with joy over, its amazing. Picture, sound, upscaling, HDR. Its great. On the negative side, the app interface is garbage, but who is buying this for streaming? I didn't, if I had i would have deducted stars, because its terrible,so if you plan to use it as a primary streaming platform its not built for it. This is an awesome 4k player, with a ton of features for playing discs. The options and menus can be overwhelming at first but that's just due to the power of this amazing player. If you want a 4k uhd player that can handle all of the HDR formats, and spit out great audio, and upscale like a beast, buy this now.

Pros: All the HDR Amazing upscaling Amazing quality Exceptional benefit for cost

Cons: Streaming interface is not good Netflix button on remote is annoying

This player is awesome. My only negative is that the menu is complex and you must spend time with the manual (it's on the internet) to set it up. It's far from "plug and play." The analog 7.1 outputs work well and are perfect for the home theater system that doesn't have HDMI audio capability. Crutchfield's support is unsurpassed and their service is beyond perfect. You can feel comfortable knowing they will back you up if you need them.

Pros: Wonderful and accurate picture and sound. Has analog 7.1 audio outputs. Slim profile and stylish.

Cons: Complex menus that require setup before this machine will work for a particular configuration. Far from "plug and play."

Does everything I need it to do. Delivers all the current HDR flavors without any problems. Lack of a proper manual in the box is unfortunate. I had to download the full manual to get all the settings right This is not a just plugin and play out of the box. It has lots of features that possibly need to be set, depending on the TV used. I plugged mine into a LG OLED65C9PUA and the sound HDMI into my Sony AV receiver. Make sure you use the proper HDMI cables also. In the end, I am enjoying the best video from 4K Blu-ray discs. I am not using any of the included apps (NETFLIX, etc.). I have an Apple TV 4K for that.

Pros: Once set up with your LCD/OLED, it gives an outstanding video experience.Highly recommend.

Cons: Lack of a full manual in the box.

seems to work well enough, however, i'm unable to comment on the advanced features at this time. i am using the player in an older system, so it is currently operating in a downscale compatible mode if you will. it is connected to an older NAD receiver and an older sharp aquos flatscreen. neither will accept the new hdmi 3.2 functions. i wanted to purchase this prior to upgrading my system because i read that disc players are being phased out for streaming services. since i live way out in the woods, and can only get DSL internet service i wanted to purchase a quality player while they are still available. i guess the only downside so far was where it is made. i was surprised to find this was made in china, not japan. because of that, i opted for the extended service plan.

Panasonic DP-UB820 - Nigh on Perfect.

David from Sunbury, OH on 12/5/2019

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Bought my DP-UB820 offered by Crutchfield. Found a bit of a quirk in that if only one high-speed HDMI cable is used to connect to the receiver (Marantz SR7012 in my case) then 4K discs play fine but BlueRay discs encounter random pauses while playing (related to layer switching I think). In this configuration the receiver forwards the video to the TV (Samsung QN75Q9FN in my case). However, if both the DP-UB820 HDMI output ports are used (send video directly to the TV and audio only to the receiver) then it works great. Otherwise, I've had zero problems with this unit in the 11 months I've owned it. In this setup I think Disney's Aladdin 4K disc delivers imagery sharper and more vivid than anything else I think I've ever seen.

Pros: Excellent 4K imagery. Lots of adjustments available to tailor the picture. Plenty of ways to connect video or audio.

Cons: Needs both HDMI ports used for best results.

I first off want to say thank you to the amazing staff at Crutchfield for spending their time and energy helping me. As a customer you could not ask for more in customer service and knowledge. Now as for the Panasonic DP-UB820 I can say that I am very saddened by the quality control of this player. I am now on my second player and can't seem to get one that will work for me. I bought this since it had so many good reviews off of many different sites. I didn't go the Sony player route because of the issue that they refuse to fix with the user having to manually switch between Dolby Vision and HDR 10 according the disc spec. Now I am faced with the dilemma of paying out $500 more dollars to step up to the Panasonic DP-UB9000. Do not get the wrong the 820's video processing is very good and audio is good/okay, but the quality is lacking. So far as a whole I have yet to be impressed by Panasonic. Again, thank you Crutchfield staff for helping me through this process.

Pros: Video is very good. Audio is good/okay.

Cons: Quality control issues.

Excellent 4K Blu-ray player, one of the best out there IMO. I'm using it with a 75 inch Samsung QLED tv. The video is great as is the audio. No problems whatsoever on any Blu-Ray disk played. Also, the Apps included with the player work very well too. I'm using a wired ethernet connection to the player through a powerline system (using my in-home electrical wiring) which I believe to be better than using the strong wifi signal my router produces.

Pros: Well built and everything works well.

Cons: None that I can think of at this time. Some have complained regarding the layout and presentation of the Apps menu but that doesn't bother me at all. I'm more interested in the functions of the unit than how "pretty" a menu may or may not be.

I purchased this unit in Feb of 2019. The picture is great! The sound is OK. I was really dissapointed with the on/off and open buttons on the top right hand side of the unit. I find that in MANY cases I have to push, pull or force slide these buttons in order to make them function...very frustrating on a unit as expensive as this. The unit also "hung" once this summer which could only be "fixed" by pulling the cord out of the AC power outlet. It was fine after being plugged back in. People are comparing this unit to the OPPO machines... From a Mechanical perspective, the OPPO is far superior IMO. If I had to do it over, I would have spent the extra $$ for the 9000.

I own 4 Sony UBP-X800 as I have four places where I can watch 4K Ultra Blu-Ray discs. All four Sony units kept locking up from time to time where the Amazon and Yahoo sign ins screens had to be downloaded over and over. I have a 200 Mbps internet service and the issue was truly related to the four Sony Blu-Rays. So I purchased 1 Panasonic DP-UB820 hoping to free myself from the reboot and re-entering my account name and password before being able to stream anything. What a surprise the Panasonic picture detail, color intensity is two to three times superior to the Sony units. Trash your Sony and buy a Panasonic.

I had issues with the blacks and whites being too harsh (had to adjust picture per movie to get a reasonable quality) and the receiver wasn't choosing the highest quality sound. (Often it would choose BD Stereo and I had to go into my receiver and manually adjust to a better setting) I also tried hooking it up HDMI from player through the receiver to the TV... better but still had same issues. I researched a number of players and found this Panasonic 820 and with its dedicated video and audio HDMI outputs, all my woes were cured immediately. Picture and sound are AMAZING and have had no more issues. At this price, it is $300 more than the Samsung but if you are looking for quality, this Panasonic is worth every penny!!!

Excellent picture, solid construction, great sound using the second hdmi. Interface is easy to use and feels a little dated, but efficient. The colors on screen are vivid and crisp. Definitely worth the price.

Pros: Image quality and color Excellent sound Easy to use

Cons: Plastic casing

Easy to use. Picture looks great. As a player I think it's great. I didn't get it for the streaming but since it offers it I hoping to load all my streaming apps. However, you are limited and the interface is cheeseie. Overall, I'm happy with it

Pros: Easy to use. Great picture

Cons: Ugly interface for streaming apps and the lack of adding apps in bad.

5 stars at the moment as it is currently doing everything I expect from a Blu-Ray player. As, I have yet to upgrade my Samsung 10 P Plasma to a 4K TV with HDR, I am unable to review those features. I have tested one of my Ultra HD movies (Aquaman) which looked great outputting video at a downrezed 1080P. Color s were quite striking and the Audio came in strong! I look forward to upgrading to a 4K tv to take advantage of this beast of a player.

Pros: Blue Ray and $K down converted to 1080P look great on my plasma tv.

Cons: None at this time.

This player presents a beautiful picture. CDs surprised me with how good they sounded. The tray pops right out, and the menu is easy to navigate.

Well worth the price. Huge upgrade from my Samsung standard Blu-ray player.

Pros: All features except one drawback.

Cons: The one drawback: remote is not back-lit.

Panasonic UB820 vs. Oppo 103D

I have an Oppo 103D so this machine is compared to my aging Oppo. Picture quality, especially upscaling is superior to the Oppo even with the Oppo's Darbee unit. Some of the sharpness from the Darbee is absent here but the detail on the 820 is still noticeably better. The real surprise is the sound. Much better sound on the 820. Surround sound is clear and very lifelike. CD's sound the way they should rather than bottom heavy as with the Oppo. 3D is fast and effortless in transitioning from the 2D settings and is a great 3D picture. After watching 2 3D films in a row my SONY projector failed to return to 4k upscaling until I turned the 820 off and on again. Then it was fine. If it was a heavier more substantial piece of equipment it would have gotten 5 stars. I am a heavy user and for me, the Panhasonic UB9000 is a better fit.

Pros: Superior picture and sound on both 1080p Plasma and 4k projector.

Cons: Light weight build does not inspire confidence in a heavy (20+ hours per week) user
