Metallica were for sure the most influential heavy metal band of the ’80s and ’90s. They expanded the sound of thrash like nobody else, along with the others ‘big four‘ ( Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax), using speed and volume at other levels. The underground movement of heavy metal started with Kill ‘Em All in 1983. The band earned a growing fan base in the underground music community and critical acclaim with its first four albums, later achieving substantial commercial success with their ‘Black Album’.
One of the most commercially successful bands of all time, has sold over 120 million records worldwide, has released nine studio albums, winning with some of them nine Grammy Awards, and has had five consecutive albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200, making Metallica the first band to do so. The band’s eponymous 1991 album has sold over 16 million copies in the United States.
Metallica has been listed as one of the greatest artists of all time by many magazines, and in 2009 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
