Actor-filmmaker Sabiha Sumar’s acclaimed debut feature film Khamosh Pani (2003) that features actors from both sides of the border (Pakistan and India), is scheduled to showcase in Karachi on Sunday. Hosted by Goethe-Institut Pakistan, the film will screen at Capri Cinema on December 9, from 11am till 2pm, alongside two short films: Dia by Hamza Bangash and All That Perishes At The Edge Of Land by Hira Nabi. Director of the film Sabiha Sumar will also be present at the screening.

Starring Kiron Kher, Aamir Ali Malik, Arshad Mahmood, the multi-award-winning Khamosh Pani (Silent Waters) is a Pakistan-German co-production and is based on real events that took place when British India was partitioned in 1947.

The story starts in 1979, in a Pakistan under President Zia-ul-Haq’s martial law, when the country had to deal with Islamization. It traces the lives of a Sikh woman Veero, her gentle, dreamy-eyed son Saleem and his young but courageous girlfriend, Zubeida. In doing so, the film explores the silencing that comes with religious and political fundamentalism and seeks hope for the spirit of enquiry.

As Zubeida says so memorably, “Saleem, I also pray but that does not mean I do not think.”

Khamosh Pani won 14 international awards including the Golden Leopard (Best Film), and Best Actor and Best Direction at the 56th Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland.
