|
|
I need help, please, with the wiring of my '68 speedo. The photo tells part of the story. I don't have a problem with the three ligts at the bottom. The problem is that the wiring diagram doesn't look anyhting like the speedo when it comes to the upper lights. (The diagram is below the speedo in the photo.)
There are 6 ports for lights at the top, but none marked K5 as on the diagram. What a mess!
Can anyone tell me how to wire my speedo?

Hey Art, I have your diagram on my computer - saved it some time ago and even printed it - but I couldn't see the detail. Are you able to enlarge the part showing the speedo? _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

ok so here is how it is from left to right 1-6.
1-- illumination lights 57 (k5 on diagram
2-- yellow headlights are on ..I wired mine to the lowbeam fuse
3--brights are on
4-- automatic transmission fluid--if stick shift then its empty cover with tape
5--defrost---if no defrost then its empty ..cover it too with tape
6--illumination lights k1 (k5 on diagram)
follow the wires and match them, if you car has no wire you may need to add it.... |

Here you go
So you can see that K1 , brights loops around to go to the brights fuse.
The yellow unlabeled one goes the lowbeam fuse.
I left out the to unused ones
the running illumination lights on either side are labeled K6 for some reason.
mine terminate at k6 because I have aftermarket vdo gas and clock gauges with the fatter bulb and they are wired into the other gauges running lights

Hi Art, I think I have it sussed out, thanks to your advice and diagram.
1. My speedo has 6 slots for lights on the back, but only 4 lights on the face of the dial. (I should have turned the speedo over before I posted my original Mayday message.)
2. Looking at the speedo from the back, I have the following colours, with the owner's manual providing the link/purpose of each, from left to right:
Green - 57 - Oil pressure
Blue - 56 - Headlights high beam
Red - K2 - Generator and cooling
Green - K1 (not mentioned in the manual) I'm going to wire this for Headlights low beam like you did so that it will show when the lights are on.
Underneath there are, of course, the three "warning lights":
Green - Oil pressure switch
Flashing green arrows - turn signal
Red - Regulator
3. As I see it, Green - 57 and Red - K2 only need power, which they can share with the clock (from Fuse 7 South - North is front of car). (The wiring diagram allows sharing power with the fuel guage light to Fuse 2 South.)
4. Blue - 56 is for headlights High Beam as you suggest, with power from Fuse 5 North.
5. Green - K1 I can use for low beam lights on, going to Fuse 3 North in accordance with your diagram.
I'd appreciate your comments and advice, and thanks for illuminating (no pun intended) this confusing subject for me.

Do you want a green light on all the time your headlights are on? Seems like that would be a bit annoying.
I don't know if it's the same for Ghias, but my Squareback has a green light in the cluster that comes on when you turn the running lights on (i.e. headlight switch out one stop) and then turns off when you pull the headlight switch out to the second stop to activate the headlights. Maybe the Ghia had the same functionality? _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

I'll learn what's going on when my car is on the road, about a week or so away, I hope. I don't mind the green light being on when the lights are on dim. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

I've prepared the wires to accord with Art's advice.
From left to right:
The red wire goes to the clock light
The black/white wire goes to Fuse 5 North (headlights high beam)
The blue/white wire goes to Fuse 3 N (headlights low beam)
The red/grey wire goes to 58b on the light switch
The black wire at the bottom goes to Fuse 7 S (or 2 S) _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

I draw network diagrams at work, and circuit schematics for fun, and IMO those VW wiring diagrams are indecipherable. _________________ 1970 KG Coupe

I feel a lot better now. I thought it was me, suffering from a shortage of braincells. The instruments don't match what's on the diagram, and the diagram doesn't match what's on the car. And, in accordance with Tolstoy's statement that not all families are unhappy, but that each unhappy family was unhappy in their own unique way, our cars appear to be "unhappy", each in its individual way, with no two ever the same. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Alright , I will give you my 2 bit advise. The speedo wiring may be different from our US right hand style and maybe the speedo is from a later year. But for sure ,The red wire from the clock will actually go in the holes covered by tape. There is a hole for ATF warning light which may be 56 and one for defrost which did not start till 1969 ? Can you give a close up of the face side, so we can see the icons next to the lights? that will be tell tale. |

K1 is the standard code for high beam light through out the years but on US market cars it is on the left side . |

I'm back Tuesday if you need a reference. But in lieu of not being there I will add that you should put some kind of blank over the spare holes such as the atf indicator as when you have the bonnet open and you are trying work out what's working and what isn't the daylight shining through is confusing. I slapped insulation tape on but I'm sure there are far better things. _________________ Rusty 61 RHD Karmann Ghia Coupe - Resto in progress....slowly

Oh, to give you some more relief of the confusion, this chart is 67 only, so the speedo only had one provision for a light at the top.in this chart your red wires are for illummination, marked by K5. |

Thanks for your input. I've said previously that I think my car is a mix of '67, '68 and '69, and this just confirms my suspicion. The wires are with one exception exactly as on the diagram, but the flasher relay and speedo are not.
That said: I've wired it up as Art suggested. Here's the face of my speedo. It has only four lights at the top, even though there are 6 apertures at the back.
The lights are, from left to right:
Green
Blue
Red
Green
(This is the first time I've noticed those pics on the dial! I'll have to get rid of them. I fortunately have the original dial as well, but will have to go and find it. And I thought lawyers used "small print"! Yikes.)
The ones at the bottom are:
Green
Turn signal Green arrows

Ok.Looks like You have to rearrange some wiring.
K1 on yours is defrost switch , not needed.
K2 is ATF and not needed.
#56 high beam. Your black /white wire.
#57 driving lights/low beam. Your blue/white wire.
Red wire from clock is for illumination/back lighting, 2 bulbs go in 2 holes covered by tape, it continues to fuel gauge's back light.
That should make it all good.
I would have thought you would have had a KPH speedo with the left hand drive
Also the ATF/K2 should be red, just checking that your lenses where put back in right order |
