In 1853 Sepoys throughout India were issued with a new rifle, the Pattern 1853 Enfield rifled musket. Nana Saheb Peshwa II (19 May 1824 - c. 24 September 1859), born as Dhondu Pant, was an Indian leader during the anti-British rising of 1857. As the adopted son of the exiled Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao II, he sought to restore the Maratha confederacy and the Peshwa tradition. After the defeat of the uprising, Nana Sahib disappeared to Naimisha Forest in Nepal and his ultimate fate is not known.

Dighton MacNaghten Probyn (1833-1924) began his career with 2nd Punjab Cavalry, serving for five years in operations on the Trans-Indus frontier before his outstanding service in the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). He was mentioned in despatches seven times during the Mutiny, then awarded the Victoria Cross 'for gallantry and daring throughout this campaign'. In 1858, he was appointed to command 1st Regiment of Sikh Irregular Cavalry. This became 11th Bengal Cavalry in 1861.
